There was a fair attendance at the Opera House.on Saturday evening to hear the famous Quaker _ Male Quartette and Miss Winifred Gray, elocutionist. The singers were W. 8. Rising, first. tenor; J. A. Williams, second tenor; W. N. Amundson, 1st. bass; N. L. Buker, Basso. The acâ€" companist was Miss Blanche Holcomb. The program was an excellent one inâ€" eluding solos, quartette and trio selections. Miss Gray‘s first recitation *A_was "A Soldierof the Empire," gainâ€" ing for her liberal applause. She reâ€" sponded with a laughable Irish dialect piece. In the second part she recited another comical selection, "By Teleâ€" phone," and was again encored. Mr. Rising made a good impression in an Italian "Jamme" and was onâ€" cored. mm-m to respond to am encore tos, as had also Mr. Amundson after rendering "The Holy City". Mr. Baker, the basso, made the hit of the evenig in a Coon song, given in response an dncore after singing the "Bandelero". After his appearance in Part II he was recalled three times, one of his selections being that Irish song, always afavorite here: "Off to Phllufolphh". Miss Holcomb, the accompanist showed great ability as such. The entertainment on the whole was very creditable and the company will find a hearty welcome awaiting them should they ever appear here again. Our Optical Department On Saturday, Wildfang and Co‘s., new store opened its doors for business, and business they got. Mr. Wildfang says the day‘s receipts were far beyond his expectations. But on seeing the excellent goods shown it is not surprisâ€" ing that the first day‘s business in this store was so large. Even before enâ€" tering, the daintly trimmed window, with its show of furnishings goods, is enough to show that a complete and thoroughly _ upâ€"toâ€"date . stock is carried. The store has been reâ€" novated, and there is not a dull spot in it. Luxfer prisms at front and bick make it one of the best lighted stc es in town. On entering the store the first attraction is a large glass case, about four feet high,in which are shown a great variety of haberdashery. This has been styled a "silent salesman"; the name is certainly appropriate. The men‘s furnishing department inâ€" cluding a large stock of English, Aâ€" merican, and Canadian hats, occupies the whole of the left side of the store. On the right side are tables of clothing and in the rear the stock of woollens, a display of which is shown in the Queen Bt. window. The rear room will be used as a fittingâ€"on room and office. Besides the six salesmen of the staff, six people are employed up stairs in the tailoring department. Mr. Wildâ€" fang has control of the Star Brand Clothing and in tailoring he supplies customers all over the Dominion from Halifax to Vancouver. The secret of this is that the clothing is right in fit, style, quality and price. From so ausâ€" picious a beginning, a successful career for this firm in Berlin, can be predictâ€" t::lroohl meeting of the Town Co was held on Thursday evening to consider the Engineer‘s report on the King St storm drain. The report was adopted though several citizens groulto(f“ vigorously against the work. ‘The Mayor and the following members of the Council were present:â€"Ald. Cochâ€" rane, Davy, Bingeman, Gross, Braun, Teall, MCCIR CC Doer and Philip ‘The total cost of the drain is $2825 of which $826.78 will be charged to the fund. ‘The work was petitionâ€" ed for in the regular way last fall from Frederick St. to Water St. Owing to the lateness of the season and as the improvement of King St. was to be gone on with the drain was put down without some of the legal formalities, of the Council trusting to the good faith of the petitioners. _ The work falls under the Ontario Drainage Act so that all whose property drains onto this portion of King 8t. are liable. Braun and the report was adopted.. never been defeated at home this seaâ€" son. Until a few minutes to time it looked as if they would defeat the champions but as usual the green and white shirted Berlinites came out on top. They scored the winning goal in extra time. LaPierre of Guelph reâ€" fereed the match, and though he did fairly well he showed timidity in not stopping rough work on the part of the Ayr team. It is said an Ayr man intimidated the referee before the game, by saying he would not be reâ€" sponeible for what happened to him if Ayr lost. _ _ 0_ _ _ 0 _ _ 0_ In thefirst half Berlin tallied twice to Ayt‘s nil, Cochrane and Seibert did the scoring, aided in combination by the other forwards. After changing ends the bome team piled up four goals in short order. . The score remained 4 â€" 2 until twelve minutes to the finish when Seibert notched Berlin‘s third. He repeated the trick at two minutes to time. When the end came the standing was four all and the teams went to work again, playing five minâ€" utes each way. In the first five, George Bochmer made a Gibsonian rush and sent the puck into the Ayr ust for Berlin‘s winning goal. There were no more scores and the contest ended with Berlin in the lead by five goals to four. The February Cahadian Magazine is an attractive issue, with five short storâ€" ies and six illustrated articles. "The Passing of the Contingents," a short article by Norman Patterson, is a deâ€" lightful summary of the part played by our soldiers. The illustrations show the celebrations in Halifax, Montreal and Toronto. Martin J. Griffin, Parâ€" liamentary Librarian, writes of Darwin, Spencer, Huxley and the other great men of the century, under the title "Dying Speeches and Confessions of the Nineteenth Century." P. T. Mcâ€" Grath, the Newfoundland journalist, ‘wflm of the question in that cojony. This is illustrated with pictures of the Premier, the leader of the Opposition, Mt. Reid and other notables. â€" Claude Bryan has a reada‘le sketch of Winsâ€" ton Churchillâ€"a clever piece of work. Marjory MacMurchy writes of Gaspe, and John Reade continues his articles on the Progre- of the Century. The celebrityâ€"of ts month is Dr. A. R. Mackay, Superintendent of Education in Nova Scotia. The stories and deâ€" partments are up to the standard of our national publication. Winnipeg, â€"Feb.â€"â€"26.â€"(Special.)â€"Promier Rol.Jin promised in the Houge toâ€"day that a railway line would be bullt in a northâ€" westerly direction from Brandon this yeir in time to move this season‘s crop. Melien says he made a pro position to the Government for the extenâ€" sion and operation of hM system in Mantâ€" toba in eonnection with the Government railways, the eompany assuming all exâ€" penses and fixed charges, aso propo«Inc that the Government have power to reduce tates to Lake Superior to 10 cents over the proposed sbort line to Dulutb. e made a formal written offer to Mr. Roblin to this effect.
