Stratford Beacon:â€"Teuton and Britain _ standing shoulder to shoulder won the Waterloo of Libâ€" eralism on Tuesday. Mr Breitâ€" haupt on that day redeemed North Waterloo for the Legislature and thereby increased Mr Hardy‘s majâ€" ority to 12. _ Mr Breithaupt is a man of affairs and ‘high character. He will be an acquisition to the Legâ€" islature, and we warmly congratulate him and the â€"Government on his splendid victory. Waterloo County Chrenicle and Woekly Telegraph. THEB LIBERAL VICTORY This constant whining of the Tory press over their licking in North Waterloo on the 23rd, is beâ€" coming wearisome. For weeks our local contemporary has flung one insult after another in the faces of the electors of North Waterloo by asserting that they were being bought up wholesale, From slandâ€" ering in this way the electors of the riding it came down to insulting the best element of Berlin on Thursday, by asserting that "in the divisions' where the electors could not be be bribed there the Conservatives gained greater support than in 1898. But in.divisions 1, 2 and 11 the Government‘s workers succeeded all too well." _ Now the Conservatives gained heavily in division 9, which embraces the outlying portions of Berlin at the East End, while the Liberals made big gains as stated by our contemporary in divisions 1, 2 and 11 and these are the divisions which lie in the very heart of the town. Is it possible then that the business portion of the town is more susceptible to the wiles of the boodâ€" ler than the outskirts? The busiâ€" ness men of Berlin should resent such an insult on their political inâ€" . tegrity. The gains of the Liberals in certain divisions were due to and the logical result of their perfect orâ€" ganization which was shown in the registration. The Liberals claimed a big gain in registration; the vote cast in Berâ€" lin proved their claims to be well founded. Galt Réformersâ€" On Tuesday North Waterlog celebrated Empire Day by again electing a Liberal to the Legislative Assembly in Toronto Ard thus correcting their mistake made at the general elections. It was a brief: lapse from virtue, but DAVID BEAN, Proprietor, Weekly N SCIENTIFIO OPTICIANs. Store Near the Post Office, Berlin. BACK TO LIBERALISM Heller Bros. A. C. MOYERS, ‘apher, » Waterloo, Ont. See our 16 for 25 Cents =â€"&Tâ€"â€" per annum‘in advance sibly one of the most stubbortily conâ€" tested elections in the history of the maing. Hoth the candidates were exceptionally strong. Dr Lackner, th: Conservative nominee, was proâ€" bably the most popular and able candidate the party could have found, and with the prestige of forâ€" mer victory at the polils, made a splendid run. The cry, which was worked for all it was worth; that he had beer unseated unfairly, unâ€" doubtedly gained ~ some _ votes, though not sufficient to affect the In Mr Louis Breithaupt the Libâ€" erals had an excellent candidate. His previous unbeaten record in Muniâ€" cipal elections was a source of some strength, but the fact that the Liberals were fighting unitedly this time, accounts mainly for the return of North Waterloo to the Liberal fold. There is, of course the usual talk of boodle, protest, and so on, but it scarcely becomes the Conservative party of North Waterloo, whose canâ€" didate was unseated for bribery, to shout boodle. On both sides it is possible there may have been some indiscreet acts by over jealous workers. We feel sute, however, that the Liberals, to whom the loss of the seat was no serious matter, have conducted a clean campaign, and that they can feel secure in the consciousness that any enquiry which may be made will reveal that, so far as they were concerned, it ywas a strictly legitimate elecâ€" tion. To the Electors of North Waterloo. We congratulate Mr. Breithaupt, the Berlin Telegraph and the noble band of Liberal workers on the vicâ€" tory they have secured. Gexntcemesn.â€"As it will be imâ€" possible for me to see you all perâ€" sonally, I take this means of most sincerely thanking my many friends in Berlin, Waterloo, and throughâ€" out the Riding, Conservatives as well as Liberals, for the hearty support so generously accorded me in the recent election. Now that I am elected as your reâ€" presentative,it will be my earnest enâ€" deavor, by all means in my power, to further the interests of this grand old agricultural and manufacturing Riding, irrespective of class, creed, or political affiliation. _. Thanking you again, I am, _ _ _ The Liberals had a big meeting in their Club rooms on Monday night. _ The successful candidate Mr. J. L. Breithaupt, M. P. P. deâ€" livered an address, thanking his friends for the magnificent support given him. The fight, although it had been a hard one had been a good straight, clean one on the part of the Liberals and the victory is ours. Hehad spent a good deal of time in Wellesley and Woolwich and he attributed the good results there largely to his personal efforts while not in the least under estimatâ€" ing the help given by his friends. Had he been able to spend more time in Berlin be believed the good results here would have been still better. Messrs. J Motz,] Bingeman, Dr. Honsberger and others spoke, all expressing gratification â€" at the noble work achieved. On Saturday at the official sumâ€" ming up of votes before Mr. John McDougall it was found the Deputy Returning Officer of polling subdivâ€" ision No 1. Wootwich, had neglected to write in words the total number of votes cast (105.) The number for each candidate however had been â€" written J)lainly in words (seventyâ€"nine and twentyâ€"six) and the Returning Officer held that these numbers being in words and not in figures the Act had been comâ€" plied with.
