Wilfrid Laurier, leader of Her Mujesty's Opposition in the Home of Commons, who will Iddress the electors of North Waterloo in the Berlin Skat- ing Rink on Thursday evening, Oct. 24th, next. --We are indebted to the pubiiahers of the Street Railway Journal, Mon, treal, for a copy of their beautiful sou- venir edition issued in honor of the Street Railway Convention now in session in that city. It contains elab- orately illustrated urticles on the prin. cipal Canadian cities and their system of Street Railways and among them we notice that of our own Twin City, Ber- lin and Waterloo system, with two street railway scenes and portraits of the President, T. M. Burt, and the Secretary, Alex. Millar, Q. C. The work from cover to cover is replete with interesting information and artist. ically displayed advertisements and does credit to this branch of the print- er's art, “The editor of the Berlin News seems to be considerably exercised on account of the agitation in this town for the establishment of a system of waterworks independent of the Berlin system. The good man hints that the agitation possibly arises out of a feeling against Berlin, and informs us that we may have to.pay dearly for our whistle when we get it. We beg to inform the News that there is no sentiment in the matter. If the change is made it will be made purely upon business cotrsiderstions-becuuise it will pay. Waterloo has an abundant sup- ply of excellent water, good for fire protection purposes and for domestic use. If it can be shown that the coat will not exceed and probably be much less than we are paying at present, why not establish a separate system l --Whtst is the matter With our town l having a night-school in connection with the Mechanics’ Institute. Scores t of boys and girls leave school to work in our factories as soon as they have reached the age of fourteen, and often before they have passed into the fourth class, and thus lose all chance of obtain- ing a better education. Many of these would gladly avail themselves of any opportunity it it were only offered them. The duwetors of our Institute should take. the matter into their moat serious consideration. The expenses in con- nection with such a school need not be great. A small fee could be charg- ed for the winter term, and the Govern- ment otfers a grant to such schools if conducted according to the regulations and if certificated teachers are employ- ed. We are convinced that such an institution would prove a boon to many boys and girls in o.ur town.
