MEL...“ - ----- - - -A h A discovery which has been the means of bringing forth a number of inventions. both great and small, was that ofGoodyear, the rubber vulcaniz er. It was not until the Goodyear dis- covery of the vulcanization of rubber in 1844 that rubber could be used, ex- cept in a primitive fuhion. Then ikwas found that by the use of sulphur at a a certain temperature, rubber could be moulded, shaped and worked into any form. Immediately after this discov. ery the application clerk at the patent cthce having charge of such: matters was besieged by hundreda and hund- reds of applications for inventions with the Goodyear discovery as a basis. They related chiefly to matters of form in which it was desired to work rub. ber. After that time the rubber blan. ket, the rubber overshoe, the rubber band followed one after the other in, rapid succession, and since that time there has not been a month that some patents have not been granted for some dstfereat forms of rubber. Now appli- cations are coming in at the rate of four or five a. month, involving many applications of the pneumatic tubing and cushioning principle. There are now pneumatic blankets, pneumatic pillows of all descriptions, pneumatic soled shoes for running and jumping, and pneumatic car fender guards. A recent invention which has come into prominence within the last two or three yeass, is the tin cap on the top of beer bottles. This appliance is stea- dily taking the place of the rubber cork with the iron thumb lever. It is found that the sulphur in the rubber cork is acted upon by the beer. An offer from some whiskey makers is at- tracting the attention of inventors. It is a reward of from 825,000 to $50,000 for an appliance on bottles which will prevent their being refilled. As it is now, all the great whiskey and beer manufacturers of the country, and in. ‘deed of the world, are constantly get- ting letters from people who complain that they have received inferior qualit- ies of liquors under well known labels. l Of couse it is impossible without some appliance for manufacturers to guaran- tee the contents of bottles. All appli- ances so far with this end in view have been unsatisfactory. The'chief didi. culty seems to be to make the invert. tion practical and cheap enough for commercial use. The problem has been solved by a number of inventors, but at too great an expense. for it has seemed up to the present impossible to get the host below $2 a bottle. Com. pleted, the appliance must not cost more than 2 or 3 cents a bottle. Several years ago a patent V15 granted for an additiod to tin cans which made the opeping of them a very easy matter, 3nd did away with the old fashioned iron can opener. The can had a small rim just below the top, beat by machinery at an nrgle just below the breaking joint. By a blow on the top of the can around the rim, the top would be broken " with it smooth edge. This did not cost the inventor one cent a. thousand above the regular price of the cons Armour, the Chicago meat men, es soon as he heard of the invention, ordered 10,0000,000 one to peek meat in, to iirl an order for the German army. The inventor of this made a fortune the first six months. His cans are now used all over the United Seton for oysters and fruits. I The ordinary wood screw, pstented Ang.20, 1846, by J.T. Moan, is record- ed emong the simplest inventions that have made the most money. Then screws were out by maohinery, some of which is still need by the American Screw Company of Providence. R. I. But the patent bed expired, end the new method invented by C D. Rogers has msny sdmtsges over the old. Under the Sloan system. the skin of the metal wee removed end the screw consequently weakened; now there is e dU which rolls screw tin-ends. .. It is beginning to appear that econ- omie questions are becoming moment/ ous in these last days. Soon govern- ments myst recognize the socialistic tendency of modern lite, and be pre- pared to admit its force in the concep- tion and administration of law. By 'eocialietie' here, nothing of u re- volutionerv nature is meant. ; but, ra- ther, that element in the labour move- ment which demands equitable tdjuat- meat of employment, time and pay. The Populist movement in the West- ern and Southern Staten, and the Pet- ron movement in our own province, ere evidence: of this growing spirit. It involves, of course, numberleu quest- ions subsidiary to the general move- ment; end they are wise legielnton who early grasp the value of the situation and bring statesmanlike powers to bear upon meeting it and denling with it.
