Inspector Boultbee and his assistants are at present unwilling to stato the exact amount of the shortage in Collector Bowman‘s accounts, but the amount now exceeds $10,000, and may be greatly increased before the close of the inquiry. It is now stated, that the office was inspected at times, tbut notwitbstanding this, the collector was defrauding the country for years. Mr. A. L Bowman was held under $10,000 security during the time that Berlin was an outport of Guelpb, but since then the bonds have not been reâ€" newed, and Government cannot recover the amount embezzled. ©The most startling part of the whole matter is that nothing was done to apprehend the collector,. _ One afternoon Bowman walked out towards the west end, while a rig followed and tcok him to New Hamburg. There be boarded the afâ€" }ternoon train for the west, and his whereabouts is now a mystery. His friends took up & collection to enable him to leave town ; the amount collectâ€" | ed is placed at $160, 4 CotrsceIL CHAMBER, | August 5th, 1895 The council met this evening purâ€" suant to sdjournment. â€" Those present were the Mayor, Reeve, Deputy Reeve and Messrs Hutchison, Biicker, U ffelâ€" man, Kauftinan, Frocehlich, Conrad, Maier, Bruce and Kuiapf.
