The number during 1894 was 79 itoba labor that the Government will hold another session of Parliament and pass rewedial legislation before going vo the country, â€" This seeims to be the course favored by muany _ Senator Smith, so it is reported, being one of those inclined to this view. MIGHT MAKE IT AN ELECTION I+stk. 4, Another course, a mojlification of the first, is that the Government introâ€" duce a remedial legislation bill, allow. their supporters from Ontario to defeat it, and then go to the country immediâ€" ately on the issue. 3. The Government may be able to persuade their friends from Quebec not to demand remedial legislatioun this sesâ€" sion, on the understanding tbat if Manitoba does not t:::;imve the disabilâ€" ities under which thwCatholics of Manâ€" ba, and perhaps certain of the British Columbia representatives. Some of the Maritime Conservatives will vote against remedial legislation. Un this _line a proposal of remedial lsgislation _would about defeat the Government, un‘ess the better part of the 30 Liberâ€" a‘s from Quebec voted with the Minisâ€" try. _ But it is said that party ties will impel them to vote against the Governâ€" ment‘s proposals, if for no other avowed reason than that the proposals do not go far enough. It is pretty certain that if the Government introduce reâ€" medial legislation, the two controllers, | Messrs, Wallace and Wood, would withdraw from their offices. EFFECTS OF NON INTERFERENCE. 2, They can refuse remedial legislaâ€" tion. In such & decision they would probably force Hon. Mr. Ouimet and Hon, Mr. Angers to resign from~ the Cabinet, and twenty of the Quebec supâ€" | porters of the Government would also | withdraw their support. This wouldl be a severe trial to the Government. | They could stand it for a time, but. they could not go to the country withâ€" out Quebec representatives in the Cabâ€"| inet. ‘ 1. The Government can introduce remedial legislation of a much milder. type than the remedial order. It is said the Ministry claum they are free to do anything or nothing, and that if vhey do anything it wili be of a mild cbaracter. But mild or not, from 20 to 30 Conservatives from Ontario will vote against it. So will the majority of the four Conservatives from Manitoâ€" P laly? ht oo o9 going on, and consider that there is no danger at hand. Others, however, think that the majority of the Ministâ€" ers are pledged to remedial legisiation, and that they will bring it down. On thie‘point the French Canadian press is & unit ; they insist that a remedial law will be introduced this session. woULD DEFEAT THE GOVERNMENT. What tend= to involve the question in some uncertainty is the face that the Government has several courses opin to it and they may be summarized as follows : NO ACTION THIS SESSION he 1 sitâ€" y T‘lfl::dng. the French members and been in close \__ _ Mr. Gladstone has telegraphed to the | Westminster Gazette a reply to the | statement made by the London Times | Thursday alleging that the exâ€"Premier | had withdrawn from his pairing agree ; ment with Mr. Charles Villiers, and | saying that Mr. Gladstone‘s action was | occasioned by his disapproval nf. the | polizy of the Rosebery Government, es | pecially in regard to the Welsh Chorch ! Hon. Charles Villiers It is learned, however, upon authority, that Mr. Giadstone‘s withdrawal is on the Welish Church bill only. An import, ant amendment to the Welsh disestabâ€" lishmeot bill, placing the schoo‘ls and public chapels under a representative ‘body, has been accepted by the Gov ernment. The tival vote on Premier Greanâ€" way‘s motion refusing the Ottawa Govâ€" eroment‘s order on Sepirate Schools was reached toâ€"nizht. 1t resulted in a majority of 15. This vote stood 25 fior and 10 against. Members of the Opposition in the Legislature deny the report that an amendment is to come froin them advoâ€" cating a secular school system in place of the present. They say that a vote was taken oa secular schools a year ago, and that nothing:can be grained by reviving the proposition. Modifications in the Welsh Disâ€" establishment Bill This feeling was imbittered to day when word reached the city from Ottaâ€" wa that the French Canadian repreâ€" sentaitives from the Province of Quebec are going to press the Government to carry out the remedial order on the Manitoba school question and to ask that a remedial law be passed this sesâ€" sion, failing which they bolt from the Government side. Winnipeg June 19.â€"Feeling over the school question is intensified as the debate progresses in the Legislature, and the battle promises to be as bitterâ€" ly fought as in the previouw.sittings of the House. The House divided on the Curran bridge scandal resolution at half past three this morning. It was defeated by 102 against to 65 for. Majority for the Government, 37. © The Frenchâ€"Canadian contingent was augmented toâ€"night by the arrival from St. Beoiface of Mr Larriviere, a gentleâ€" man who has persistently fought for the recognition of the rights of the Catholic minority. ANOTHER DAY OF CURRAN BRIDGE. Another sitting bas been spent in discussing the Curran bridge matter. The speech of the day was Sir C. H. Tupper‘s. Mr McCarthy spoke until after \? o‘clock this morning, and Mr. Fostet had the floor at 2.30 a.m., with Bir Richard Cartwright taking copious notes for a reply, _ _ 8 & i During Mr. Ewart‘s recent visit to Ottawa it was pointed out to him that the drafc bill was too sweeping.
