AT Mn * entmitnts ol hnsdc ihoslint Geiit® dnoictndiich the ied Everyone knows that Holland, the original home of the Holstein, is one of the greatest dairy countries in the world, many of the farmers detfidinq entirely ugon their cows for ir exâ€" istence. Since coming to America the Holstein has noHybgldhuovynin&ll public ;e;u she has ever e%hnd. The record of one of Canada‘s Sweepstakes Holstein cows may be of m"b some of your readers a o I it as taken from Canadirn Live Jearnal pâ€" . â€" | _ EP3 h Being fadvised they Thaqa sufficient material for an action against him they secured the services of solisitors who instituted proceedings, demanted a reâ€" | traction and apology or in liue thereof | an action for £2000 damages would be ; proceeded with â€" The following letter | speaks for itself : some very strong st .tements regarding the Holstein cow. I have been inâ€" formed by several who were in attendâ€" avce that he put them down as comâ€" pletely useless and would have nothing to do with them whatever for cheese making. What induced Mr. Jack to speak as he did fail to see unless it be the blindâ€" ness of prejudice. We bavé often heard that the milk of this cow is blue, the beef is bilue, and, perbaps, the bones may also be blue. Perhaps Mr. Jack has also heard this and taken it for tha truth. It is not my intention in this article to champion the merits of any breed, but for the benefit of those who may be interested in dairying I wish to place before them a few plain facts : Drgar Sir.â€"There are reports floatâ€" ing about that Mr. Hugh Jack, who addressed a meeting on the chease quesâ€" tions.at Elmira a short time ago, made To the Editor of the Chronicle. â€" m Speunnbenn‘ 154 woes 1 believe tnat the e ch rges are not true. £ If anything I have saii has led to any such sosp ci n r sting on M s. Peters, Berlin, who !ca.rries the largest stock. Messis. Fic‘l & Memillan, Barcisters, &o., Guelpl! They have positive proot that he has charged some members of the family of having laid those sticks without a doubt. Afterwards many rumo.s were heard about the affair and the names of the Wilkinson family were implicated in consequence of various false reports circulated. They got intelligence of the slander, employed the Canadian Detective agency to find out its source and traced the reports to Walter Vreitch, the Misses Proudfoots‘ tenant. Some thought it was done to injure them, others thought it was done to frighten them away as neither of the sticks was found with thgir wood. A Toronto deteétive investigated the matter but could get no evidence im plicating azyone so no proceedings were taken against anybody. The Wilkinsons Completely Exonerâ€" ated. It will be remembered that two sticks of wood charged with gun powâ€" der were found on the premises of the Misses Proudfoot near Winterbourne. The first stick was found about the first of May, 1893, on the path leading from the barn to the house. The seeâ€" ond about the 15th of Oct. of the same year was found in the hen house where tne Misses Proudfoot were in the habit of gathering eggs. 2 COLD Is THE WEATHER, but not cold enough to deter people _ from visitlnfi Beck‘s China Store to secure Bargains whic he is now offering in Dinner, Tea ana Toilet sets. COMMUNICATION. John F. Beck, (Sgd.) W interm urne. Jan No. 4. King St., Berlin Yours truly, Warurer Vieirteu re Wilkinson 9t ) inst came that Inever to 5. Wilkinson or 1895 Waterloo County Chronicle, rates on large sums to,be ST. CLENENTS Mr. Ewil Huaber of Berlin was here busy as a bee for several weeks at Mr. J,. Rosenblatt‘s decorating an altar which is to go to Cayuga, His work: manship, which is of the highest color and taste deserves praise. He painted beautiful vines with grapes in their colors on them, besides other elegant flowers all in tasteful harmony. The writer, a friend of music, was much pleased to meet Mr. Haber who is a practical comic singer and both enterâ€" tained themselvis and others several times at Mr. P. B. Greyerbiehl‘s fine piano. _ Several of our old German songs were awakened from their long sleep. We wish Mr. Huber the best successand highly recommend his ability as decorator to all those requiring his service in churches, etc, for first class workmanship.... Mr. J. F. Stumpf, wife and daughter left here for Chesâ€" ley last week where they intend spendâ€" ing several weeks visiting friends and relatives. Said Mr. Stumpf, famous mason of our village, ‘has conducted with success his business for many years here, will undoubtedly enjoy the pleasures which decorate a happy trip.. ... . Mr. Albert Rau, son of the noted egg buyer, also went up country, inâ€" tending to be united with a better half. It seems that up in Bruce the young ladies have great attractions, for I was informed that Messrs. John Hammer and Mosser of Bamberg also sought refuge in like manner up yon . ... Trafâ€" fic and business here were nearly put to aâ€"standstill last week by the storm and severe cold weather. But again its ital Paidâ€"up. ER&rgo Fund|... THE TRADERS BANK revival is at hand » ® "Eunice Clay (now owned by A.and G, Rice, Curries, Ont.,) at the Onio State Fair in 1893, won lst prize for solids not fat, and the milk prize, proâ€" ducing in twentyâ€"four hours 88 !bs. 10 oz of milk which contained 7.66 lbs. of solids not fat. Sbe also‘ has a butter record of 23 Ibs, 9 oz in seven days, ber milk record of 84 lbs. 10 oz is the largest amount of milk produced in twentyâ€"four hours during an otficial teat of which there is any record. She also won the $100 on milk test prize at Toronto Industrial last September against all comers. The test was open to all breeds." BLOOMINGDALE Judging by the number of logs piled up at our factories at present to be worked up, employment will be given to quite a number of men for some time. _ And still they are rolling in .. Mr. Jacoo Turrel who left for Elora & couple of weeks ago to manufacture shoes is again ander the parental roof. There‘s no place like bome....Our school house caught fire twice last week in endeavoring to fire up the furnace to put a damper on Jack Frost,. The flames were extinguished with sgnow without any trouble but we do not care to use what little we have of this comâ€" modity for this purpose....The home of Mr, Benj. Suyder was saddened on Sunday morning last by death claiming as a victim their sonu Benjamin, a bright lad of fifteen summers, The young felâ€" :ow had always enjoyed good health until a couple of weeks ago when he was seized with an attack of pleurisy after which inflammation of the liver set in which carried him off despite the efforts of kind friends to save him. The funeral on Tuesday afternoon was very largely atrended, showing that the beâ€" reaved have the sympatbhy of a large circle of friends. Floradale, Feb. 11th, 1895 From the above records I think any one may see at least that the Holstein is worthy of a place in any dairy whether it be for butter or for cheese. â€" My own experience might also be of a little interest to some of your roadâ€" ers. For the last ten years we have been keeping a few Ayrâ€"hire cows which we found very f«ir dairy cows, last summer a pair of Holsteine weére bought and now we have an Ayrshire been milking about three months and about 8 or 9 years old and a Holstein 3 years old milking about a month. Since hearing Mr. Jack‘s remark we became curious to know how the cows stood. _ Accordirgly we had some milk tested, the Holstein proved to be the better quality as well as producing the largest quantity. Both were fed exâ€" actly the same. I would not have re«ders Lelieve that this small test has alone convinced me that one breed is better than the other. _ I do not think so small a test sufficient for that but I am perfectly satisfied that as a dairy cow the Holstein has entered the race to stay. â€" â€" a Deposit receipts issued.
