Strange Tricks Unwittingly Played by Compositors, of misprints is the fact that many authors persist in employing the most extraordinary jcontractions and symâ€" bols, and trust, to the iatelligence of the printer for thair accurate solution. If he sees and{readgeverything through the same spectacle as the author, well and good: but if not, he is reviled (and generally ; unjustly) as impenetrably stupid. It is not any part of his proâ€" vince to either elucidate or play havoc with , the manuscripts which are enâ€" trusted to him; but there are people who seem to entertain the entirely misâ€" taken idea that he should rectify all the blunders in grammar and orthoâ€" graphy which may come in his way. The clergyman, therefore, who supplied to the local press the manusecript of his sermon on Temperance, could not reaâ€" sonably blame the compositor, who in "setting.up" the copy faithfully adâ€" kered to the original; but it must have considerably surprised the readers of the journal to «discover the following recorded amongst the reverend gentleâ€" man‘s personal experiences: "Only last Sabbath, dear brethren, a young woâ€" man in the parish died very suddenly whilst I was preaching the gospel in a state of beastly intoxication." It would, too, be gross presu.option in & compositor to interfere with an editorâ€" ial comment; and henceâ€"although it doubtless appears somewhat startling â€"no correction was attempted in the note which was prefixed to a contribuâ€" tion in the "Poets‘ Corner" of a Cumâ€" berland journal: ‘"These lines were written nearly fifty years ago, by a gentleman _ who bas for several years lain in the grave for his own amuseâ€" ment." The clergyman who penned it, and not the printer, was responsible for the advertisement: "Wanted, a young man to take charge of a span of horses of a religious turn of mind," and we must lay at the door of the report er the blame for this curious statement in the account which a Glasgow newsâ€" paper gave of a shipwreck on the coast of Ayr:; "The captain swam ashore, and succeeded in also saving the life of his wife, She was insured in the Northâ€" ern ; Marine Insurance Company for five thousand pounds, and carried A FULL CARGO OF CEMEXNT." But it is impossible to acquit the proofâ€"readers of a large share of the blame attaching to such blunders. True it is, we owe to their vigilance the fact that innumerable atrocities arerescued from the publicity that would otherâ€" wise attach to them, and their work is so monotonous and wearisome that we must look with a forgiving eye on many of their lapses. Announcements of births, marriages and deaths, market intelligence, betting news, stock and share reports, etc., do not form for them very attractive reading; and it is \but natural that the overworked readâ€" e\\;honld hasten as much as possible over that portion of the work ‘._llotted t:o“ n.. A few years ago a proofâ€"reader on one of the leading jonrnals of Belfast was asked to exâ€" plain how he had passed over an adâ€" vertisement: which ran thus: "For Sale, a handsome mahogany table by a lady who is going to America with three carved legs;" but the censure was not entire‘y undeserved, for the same ,young man had a short time previously allowed to escape his obserâ€" vation a humorous paragraph which had been sent in by & local wag. In contained an announcement of a ballot; and the ‘amused public was informed that "the prizes included a beautifal lady‘s gold watch, and a handsome silverâ€"mounted gentleman‘s umbrella." But was it anything worse than the Leicester advertisement about "PaATENT LEATHER woury‘s soors!" More remarkable was the negligence which resuited in the reference, in the course of an obituary notice in a leadâ€" ing "daily," to a deceased General as "a battleâ€"scared soldier" Obvious as was the meaning, the blunder was in all conscience bad enough; but a thouâ€" sand times worse was the correction which, as the story runs, appeared in | the succeeding issue. _ "Weregret that | in your notice of the lamented Generâ€" ‘| al yesterday," ran the explanation, "a typographicai error appeared; but it ‘ | was of course manifest to our reajers || that the phrase ‘battleâ€"reared soldier‘ should have read ‘bottleâ€"scarred soldier.‘ \| We unhesitatingly tender to his relaâ€" | tives the expression of our deep regret Waterloo County Chronicle, Thursday, November 29, 1894.â€"Page 7. Searles, of Brooklyn, N. Y., thus discourses on the apple as medicine : â€" "The apple is such common fruit that very few personsfare familiar with its remarkably efficacious mediâ€" cinal properties, Everybody ought to know that the| very best thing they can do 1s to eat apples just before reâ€" tiring for the night. Persons uniniti ated in the mysteries of the [fruit are liable to throw up their hands in horâ€" ror at the visions fof dyepepsia which such a suggestion may summon up,but no harm can comefto éeven a delicate system by the cating of {ripe and juicy apples just before going to {bed. The apple is an excellent brain food, because it has more phosphoric acid in easy digestible shape than any other vegeâ€" table known. It excites the action of the liver, promotes sound and healthy sleep, fandgthoroughly disinfects the mouth. This is not all. The apple agglutinates the surplus acids of the stomach, helps the kidney secretions and prevents calculus growths, while it obviates indigestion and is one of the best preventatives known of diseasâ€" es of the throat. Everybody should be familiar with such knowledge and I hope you will help disseminate it. In addition, next â€"to ithe orange and the lemon, it is the best antidote for the thirst and craving of the person addictâ€" ed to the alcohol or the %pium babit." of any soap in the market.
