Monday evening a mass meeting of the citizens of Berlin was held in the Town Hall, to consider the question of giving aid to the Williams, Greene & Rome Company which lately failed. Mr. E_R.C. Clerkson, the assignee, was present and gave a statement of the affairs of the Company. He said the Company had paid out in wages and expenses since coming to Berlin, 8800,000 or $100,000 a year. The Company now does abusiness of 8260,- 000 per annum, (it) cents on every dollar going for wages. It started with 150 hands and now employs 300. The plant and machinery was valued at 875,000, He said the Bank of Commerce had refused them further credit because two of the stockholders who at the time their notes were ac- cepted by the W. G. dz R. Company were rated at from $75,000 to $85,. 000, had each speculated in real estate and failed. The Company had also lost money by having its business spread over the country too much. Formerly they sold goods by wholesale but last year they eonhned them. selves entirely to the retail trade. 845,000 or $50,000 was necessary to continue the business and if Berlin gave then; no aid the creditors had de- cided to wind up the business. He asked on behalf of the Company a loan of $25,000 without interest to be paid back in 10 years, $2,500 to be paid back annually. As security they would give a second mortgage on the plaut---there being one already for $15,000 on it and also preferred stock in the Company to the extent of $25,000. Should the town not give the loan they would endeavor to raise the amount by privatezsnbscriptions, otherwise the crash is inevitable. Speeches were made favorable to the loan by W. Jaffray and Hugo Kranz and in opposition to it by Dr. Clemens and John Motz. A motioiin favor of granting the g25,000 bonus was favs ored by two or three while the greater bulk of the audience voted against it. ion, $3; C. J ecobl, binding collector rolls,82.li0; Geo. A. Thirteen Jap- anese transports conveyed by 19 war- ships arrived in the estuary of Taston- Rang on the 18th inst., and landed a force of 6,000 men,who advanced upon Ping Yang. When midway between the landing place and their objective point, the Japanese were attacked by Chinese cavalry who succeeded in div- iding the advancing column into two parts. There-upon the Chinese "till lery poured a heavy fire into the Jap- anese ranks creating almost a panic.
