J I tasGriiik Since the ttbpm it! written, we - ins Berlin print that the Executive M r. Gardiner will retire from the field and providing fu rther that the Bamberg Oracle becomes a. consenting party to his candidature. Mr.Shoemnker can be easily disposed of but whether sufficient pressure an be brought to bear upon Mr. Gardiner to cause hint to retire remains to be Mr tihoemsker's candidature WM never very seriously taken by anyone and we were not surprised to learn yesterday that he had handed in his resigrutionand that another Patron con- vention had'been called for this (ThurS' day) afternoon to take into consido ra. tion the propriety of accepting Mr. Shoemaker':, resignation and of placing another candidate in .the field, We understand 'that overtures have been made to Mr. Valentine Otterbein, deputy reeve of Wellesley, toallow hi m- self to be put forward as the Patron candidate. M r. Otterbein will consent to stand providing Mr. Shoemaker and M r, Robert son,the Reform candidate, has been holding a series of very suc- cessful meetings in different parts of the Riding and has met with every en" couragement, The meetings ha’ve been well attended and were all very among- ly in his favor. A number of them were attended by Mr. D. M. Shoemak- er the candidate of the Pat tom and by M r. McKay who spoke in favor of Mr. 8hoemtsker's candidature. _. Mr. Meredith has so few candidates l in the field that it is impossible that he I can carry the Province, and he could l get pou er by no Other means than by ' n“combination."His government Ivould be inharmonious and unstable. There i, grave fear that, in order to hold to- gether the, men who are attacking the professions, and shouting for decentral- ization, anddenouncing the corporations and breeding suspicions of legitimate commercial operations, measures Gr more radicaland far more revolutionary than justice demands or sound policy sanctions would be forced through the Legislature to the grave unsettling of lamestabliehed interests, to the injury of our credit, and to the very special peril of the great natural industries of the country-Agriculture in all its branches, mining and lumbering. The effect of such a notice to the world of investors in England and other mone- tary centres as the dismissal of Sir Oli. ver Mowtst, distinguished as his admin- ; istration is quite as much for its safe l and prudent management of Ontario’s I affairs as {Grits extraordinary duration l of nearly a quarter of a century, would i be disastrous in the extreme upon the business, of the country. The plea-ht 'ghstst and perfect. a! by zithrhiog We Pe, “- a. on: an)“ 1rii1l?tt..tt?3r1iPp g TJe, A very large and enthusiastic meet. ing was held here in the interests of the Reform candidate on Tuesday eve- ning. The large hall was literally packed. The chair was occupied by Mr. 8nyasr,prte of the promising young Liberals, who are taking an active in- terest in the present contest. Mr. Robertson opened with a neat, short speech and in closing the meetin his reply to certain allegations wedge by Mr. McKay was most happy and et. fective. The meeting was also ad, dressed by 11W. B. Snider, E. P. cu. meat and ttf/ttt on the Reform side and Mr. .MSboemeker, the Pat. ren tsamlidqh sad J. F. McKay. The meeting yezlvery strongly in Mullah. erteon’e far . On Monday evening a large and en. thusiastic meeting was held in support of Mr. Robertson’s candidature in the old School House. Dr. T.M.Robinson acted as chairman. Messrs Robertson Snider and McBride addressed the meeting in English and Messrs. Sarah and Roschman of Waterloo in German. No Opposition speakers were present and the vote here will be overwhelm: ingly in favor of the Reform eandi. date. Mr, Gardiner, the P. P. A, can- didate, was also through here last week stuhing the people with made-toorder facts, on the sly. I lis arguments savor strongly of P. HA -ism. He claims to be thoroughly independent and,dUtrib. Utes Conservative campaign literature. Beware ! COXESTouo. M r. Robertson held a. very successful meeting here last Friday evening. Be- sides him Messrs. McBride, E. W. B. Suider,Allan Shantz, B.S.A , and Geo. Moore made speeches. The latter gentleman was particularly effective in defending the acts of the Mowat Administration from the standpoint of a practical farmer. Mr, J. G. Hurst performed the duties of chairman very etliciently. The vote here will be verr strongly in favor of the Liberal tuiii'-l date. The Reform mass meeting last Thursday evening was well patronized and was one of thehst interesting ever held In Elmira. The Reform can- didam. M P. Robertson, assisted by Messrs.1£. W. B. Snider, Bitzer, Motz and Dr. Ullyot and the Hon. Jas. Young, Gat, spoke well and all very enthusiastically upheld the Mowat Government. h D.' hr, Shoemaker, the P.ofI.cundidate, le was the fimt speaker who arrived but as he was soon followed by Messrs. F. Colquhoun, A. B Robertson and C. if Biker and Dr. L B. Clemens of Berlin. 1- Although Mr. Robertson was estrang- 3t er in this locality he soon won, the d favor of the electors while delivering d a neat address, during the delivery of which he was freiluently applauded. 0 He stated that headid not appear on t the platformus an eloquent speaker, 0 but came to them as a plain, common t farmer. If elected, he would support,‘ although not slavishly, the Mowat Gov. e ernment in the beet interests of the electors. The next speaker Was Mr. Shoemaker who stated that although he had to meet a lawyer and a doctor, he was not afraid of them and made a ' stirring appeal to the electors to sup- b port him in the interests of the Pat. , runs. He tried to show the grand ' work the Patrons are doing in sup- F pressing combines although he failed to show any grievance they found in the Mowat Administration. In referring to their twine factory he said that any farmer could procure twine at Patron prices, out of which arose a controversy. Dr. Clemens followed in an elaborate address gand refuted certain charms l made against Mr Robertson. The Or. _ is quite a clever speaker and gave the , Opposition some hard hits. Mr Bitzer l followed with a strong speech in defence l of the Government. Before the close l of the meeting, Mr. Devitt, the chair- J man, told the audience to vote for Mr. J Robertson on the 26th, for he did not l believe in supporting turncoats. , I WINTERBOURNE g A meeting was held here on Wrd, J nesriay evening, 6th inst, in the inter- li -P, ts of Mr. Robertson. Messrs E. W. C Snider and E. P. Clement were if sent to assist the Reform candidate. J ghetPatron candidate accompanied by R Mr. J. F.
