Sales have to be pushed, collections looked after, and opportunities watched as never before. The strain of competition is so tre mendous that the margin of profits is reduced to a shadowy minimum. Without eapital, brains and enterprise there is little hope of a man making more than the faintest impression. There are still opportunities enough for the man with money, nerve and pluck. At this rate of saving we would soon pay off our inâ€" debtedness and have one of the best equipped fire halls in the province. In order to meet the demands of his growâ€" ing business he has been obliged to put in a large refrigerator of double the former capacity, containing all the latâ€" est improvements and he is thus able to keep the meats sweet ar d freeh for weeks. _ At this season of the year Mr. Duering carries an enormous stock of sugar cured ham, bacon, summer S&USâ€" ages, Bologna, liver sausage, head cheese, Wiener, pork aud blood sausâ€" ages. Mine host Seyler disâ€" tinguished himself by setting up a most sumptuous repast which would have done credit to Harry Webb himself. After disposing;, of the excellent things provided for the inner man, President Roschman opened the intel lectual . part of the programme in a neat speech in which he pointed out the various avenues of usefulness lying before the Waterloo Board of Trade, and closed by proposing the toast to "TheQueen" which, was honored as loyal citizens of Waterloo know how to do. "The Army and Navy" was next remembered, Mr. Ruby responding by singing a verse of "Red, White rnd Blue." + "The Lieut.â€"Governor and Ontario Lezislature was responded to in a hapâ€" cuntnld â€" n ids t uin hifi t Aan o cce k: 7 I py vein by Mr. Scully who referred very humorously to his experience four years ago when he was elected to stay at home by a very large majority. He considered, however, that the Governâ€" ment of Ontario was not at present reâ€" clining on a bed of roses, considering the besetments by the P. of I., P.P.A., Prohibitionists, _ Antiâ€"Prohibitioinst3 and the regular Opposition. He locked forward to a time when the petty issues that seemed causelessly to separate people in provincial politics, would cease to divide, and our people would be less partisan and more patriotic. "The Governorâ€"General and Parliaâ€" _ ment of Canada," . was eloquently reâ€" plied to by T. E. Bownan, M. P. for North Waterloo. He alluded to the distinguished character with which the present incumbent of the Viceâ€" Regal throne comes to us, and praised the exâ€" cellence of our system of Government, under which the people really govern, while the strongtbut?flexible tie which binds us to the Empire as a whole is represented by the Governor General. Oune notable fact in our history is the enforcement of our laws, which are cavried out almost without friction or disturbance, showing that they are reasonable and wise as a whole or at Teast consonant with the wishes of the vast majority of the people. Speaking of local matters he said it was admitted by all commercial men that the busiâ€" ness men and manufacturers of the sisâ€" | ter towns of Waterloo and Berlin are in a thoroughly sound and healthy conâ€" dition, more so, indeed, in this time of general depression than those of any other towns or cities in the country. A goodly share of this prosperity is due to the economical, thrifty and inâ€" dustrions habits of the German people who form a majority of the. people of these towns. _ _ Mr. Ruby sang "Ihe mhippers Of ob. Ives" in capital style. "The Commercial, Manufacturing and Banking Interests" of the Town proposed by the Vice.â€"Chairman, Mr J. W. Fear, was responded to by Messrs. (Geo. Diebel, J. G. Stroh, J. Hespeler, (Gea Moore, Geo. Hasenflug, Fred. Doerâ€" ing in brief but clever speeches. eootn. 2 n se mlbte n io 2 A comic song was rendered by Mr Chas. Mr. Will Raymo gay 1 . % y gave a pleasing "The Learned Professions" on the "egal side was responded to by Mr. A. B. Board of Trade Banquet. "The Corporation of the Town of Waterloo" called up the Mayor, Mr.R. Y Fish, Reeve, S.Snyder and Conncilâ€" lor J . H. Roos. M The Mayor spoke at some length of the advantages of our Town in many respects, of its prosperity, and absence of destitution, stating that there has not been a single case of destitution reported to him during the time that he has occupied the Mayor‘s chair. Reeve Sr;â€"yder gave a neat address ou municipal taxation and brought out miny interes.ing points and proved conclusively that the Town is municiâ€" paliy, well governed. Then followed a very humorous song by Mr. Charles Frochlich in his inimitâ€" able style. . * «The Press" was responded to by Mr. W.H. Riddell and Mr. M. S. Hallâ€" man, who gave a solo. "The Ladiesâ€"God Bless ‘FEm" was gallantly replied to by Messrs.
