On March last, an old man named Peter Powers, of Mornington, was brutailly assaulted and robbed. Three young meu named Andrew Buchanan, Edward Parkinson and Robert Fair | were accused of the crime and were ) sent up at the fall Assizes, bail being gaccepted. _ Parkinson and Fair did not appear in court when called upon and bench warrants were issued for their avrest. _ Yesterday afternoon Mr. Robâ€" ert Hannay, who was Fair‘s bondsman, appeared in town with the runaway, in whom Ire was most interested. Fair was evidently under the impression that Mr. Hanna was going to renew his bail, and was very much put out * when that gentleman left him in charge of the police, saying that he had other business to attend to. Young Parkinson came to town this morning with his father, expecting apâ€" parently to meet his bondsman, Mr. Wa.. Ede. Mr. Ede was not forthâ€" â€" In the summer of 1849 he resigned, went to Amherstburg, becoming editor of The Courier, â€" At the end of a year he returned to Kingston, and for ten years was mauager of the Baitish Whig, under the late Dr.. Barker._ He later joined the News staff as a reporter, and in 1868 he accepted a position in the postoflice department under the Federal Government, and removed from the city to Ottaw=. Prior to this he conâ€" tributed poetic effasions to the Can«â€" dian press and brought out two books, highly spoken of by able critics. Durâ€" ing Mr. MacKenzie‘s adwinistration he bette ed Mr. Sangster‘s ofticial position, which eased the poet‘s mind and pocket. He left Ottawa. with _ a good retirâ€" ing allowance. Since his superannuaâ€" tion be lived at Buffw‘o, N. Y., and Kingston. / He was justly regarded in early days as Canada‘s national bard. He had a deep regard for everything British and was inspired with kindly and commendable feelings. . some passâ€" ages 6f his poems are regarded as beauâ€" ful and lofty, rich and grand in exâ€" pression, and honerable alike to head and heart. \ An exchange thus characterizes Mr. Sangster‘s work : In trippling measure and in stately stanzas he painted for his country men pictures of the natural beauties of Canada which they prized and which they will doubly value now that the hand that penned. them is stilled in death. The only regret is that he did not accomplish more, which he probably would have done had he been forced to make his livelihood in the field of authorship, but when he was at the zenith of his power he acâ€" cepted a position in the civil service, after which he neglected the poetica: facuity and in ‘recent:years was little heard of, if at all. What he bas left to his countrymen are more fragments ofâ€"what he could have done, do we estiâ€" mate his power properly, but such as they are they will hold the place which they have made for themselves. There are some wha dispute Charles Singâ€" ster‘s stending as a poâ€"t, but anyone who has knowledge of the art must admit that there is an intensity and pathos in many of his lines which bear the stamp of excellence and hift him above the rank of the rhymster. . Take the tenderness of "The Light in the Window Pane" as a sample, and in it will be found as true a poetic ring as in any native work : A joy from my soul‘s departed, A bliss from my heart is flown, As weary, weary bearted, I wander alone, alone ; The night wild sadly sighetb A whitnering, wild refrain, And my heart within me dieth For the light in the windowâ€"pane The stars overhead are shining, As brightly as e‘er they shone, As heartless, sad, repining, _ I wander alone, alone, A sudden flash comes streaming, And flickers adown the lane ; But no more for me is gleaming Thelight. in the windowâ€"pane. The voices that pass me are cheerful, Menylaugh as the night winds moan They cannot tell how fearful ‘Iis to wander alone, alone ; Foc them with each night‘s returning, Fife singeth its tenderest strain ; Where the beacon of love is burning The light in the windovwâ€"pane. Ife Was a Poct and Journalist and Ranked Among Canada‘s Best. Mr. Charles Sangster, poet and jourâ€" nalist, who died the other day at the residence of his nephew in Kingston was in bis seventyâ€"second year. Mr. Sangster, catied Canada‘s own poet, was born at the navy yard, Kingston, on July 16, 1822. He received a meaâ€" e educavion, and ut fifteen years of hge got evployment in the laboratory at ort Henry, where he helped (to make the cartridges with which Capt Sandon, of the Royal Navy, battered the old windmill at Prescott. Mr. Sangster was later appointed to the ordnance department, where heremammed ten years on small sal«ry, without any possible chance of promotion. m Mnieuien e dobe oS us Oh sorrow beyond all sorrows, To which human life is prone ; Without thee, through all the toâ€"morrows To wander alone, alone ! Oh darx deserted dwelling, Where hope like a lamb was slain, No voice from thy lone walls willing, No light in thy windowâ€"pane? Edward Parkinson and Robert Fair, who jumped their bail instead of apâ€" pearing at the fall Assizes, are now reflecting upon their conduct in Castle Nichol. CHARLES SANGSTER They Jumped Their Buil, "Oh, to ‘come out? you must have‘ a tea or bali or be formally introdueed i1 some fashion," said the youthful authority, decisively. "Whereas ‘(go ing out‘ is quite differentâ€"you are in suciety ‘incog,‘ as it were, and it takes a long time to be fully recognized. Better have tea; it is rather a good plan, as one gains a lo6 of experience and knowledge of the world which is invaluable to a debutante the next season."â€"New York Tribune. Sebringville. Buchanan who stood his ground, was in town toâ€"day hoping to have hbis case disposed of at the County Court. COMINGOUT AND GOING OUT There seems to be a considerable difâ€" ference between "coming out" and "goâ€" ing out," as ?Lpplied to a young girl‘s debut in society. These reâ€" quests were sacredly complied with, and after the usua‘ ceremonies by the chief priest the body was placed on the pyre. It was hardly in a blaze when a series of tremendous . explosions frightened the mourners so that they almost took to their heels.
