All trace of him had been lost, and for many years the money lay unclaimâ€" _"ed. At length, as though by the merâ€" â€" est chance, the missing heir was found; and the fortune, which had by this _ time become consideravly augmented, was handed over to the much delightâ€" ed, though now somewnat aged, "young man." Tt happened one day that the soliciâ€" tor in whose keeping the ducusents were which related «o the property, ‘ found ib necessary, in order to econoâ€" â€" mize space, to curfail the size of his _ outer office â€" For this end_he called in F 7 â€" Nopouoid One day the beggar, who looked more wretched than usual, incited the gentleman‘s compassion to such an unâ€" usual extent that the latter, in a fit of generosity, handed him half a soverâ€" eign, jocosely remarking that he might want it returned someday. . As ’],;/ha.ppened, he never invested ten shillings to a better purpose. | The gentleman received her so poâ€" ‘litely that the poor woman got quite *eonfused; it transpired, however,. that her husband was entitled to a large house property situated in the West end of London. â€" She was told he had been advertised for several times, and, judging from the number of applica tions that had poured/in, his name must be very common. \â€" Tt seemed that a distant relative upâ€" on his mother‘s side had taken a great fancy to him as a boy. Family disaâ€" ereements had prevented her from asâ€" sisting him during her lifetime ; but they did not debar her from substantiâ€" ally proving her regard in her will, The net value of this property which this fortunate paperhanger realized was close upon $1,000 a year. ing it might, after all, be a mistake, she said nothing to him when he reâ€" turned; but next day sought, out the address of the solicitor to whom all inquiries were to be made. "been in a better position he had occaâ€" sionally assisted a poor mendicant who used to station bimself at che head of a wellâ€"known. Westâ€"end thoroughfare. Some years later the gentleman, who was then earning a precarious livelihood as a "commission agent," noticed an advertisement in one of the papers requesting him to call ab a cerâ€" tbain address, where he would "hear ef something to his advantage." He did call; and to his astonishment found that a legacy of £3,200 had been beâ€" queathed to him by his erstwhile friend, the elderly mendicant, in conâ€" sideration of the little kindnesses he had shown to him many years before. Tt is not often in thisfprosaic, matterâ€" ofâ€"fact age we hear of such a singular combination of circumstances as those which induced the homeâ€"coming of a certain country gentleman. As a scion One of the most unlookedâ€"for, and perhaps â€" extraordinary â€" "windfalls" which happened within recent years happened during the autumn of 1891. A gentleman, whose connection among sporting cireles had eventually led to his ruin, became the recipient of a handsome bequest. When he had e ot his tools. A few days later,â€"as his wile sat one one evening, she carelessly anced over the columns of the newsâ€" paper, and much to her surprise, found it contained an advertisement asking for the address of her husband. London, Nov. 4.â€"A private desâ€" patch received in this city from Buenos Ayres reiterates the report published here on Nov. Ist, to the effect that the rebel Brazilian warship Republic ran into and sank the Government troop ship Rio Janeiro, while the latter vesâ€" sel was conveying troops from Rio Grandedo Sul to essist the Governâ€" ment forces at Rio de Janeiro. The first reports of the affair stated that 500 troops had been drowned. This despatch says thirteen hundred soldiers went down on the transport. This lacks official confir uation; Mello‘s sympathizers claim it is true. MURDER AT DRESDEN, ONT. Dresden, Ont., Nov. 6.â€"A most brutal murder was committed here this afternoon.. . Hiram Richeson (colored) knocked down and kicked his wife to death. Richeson has always been eruel to his wife, and it is said had often threatened to do this terrible deed.. She had left him several times, but was as often induced to return. Yesterday Richeson began abusing his wife again, and this morning after he had left for work she had a dray loadâ€" ed with her household effects, intendâ€" ing to leave for good; but it is supposed that he supposed what she would do, for he returned. She tried to escape, but he ran her down. The coroner‘s inquest was held this afternoon, and a verdict of wilful murder was brought in. At last it seemed as though Dame Fortune hadâ€" decided to compensate him for the disappointments he had hitherco endured. No sooner had the requisite capital been subscribed, an d the mine reâ€"opened, than a rich lode of silver, was struck, which for several years secured a steady output of metal and an increasing income for the com:â€" pany, which is toâ€"day one of the largâ€" est in tho States. The Southâ€" While here one day an officialâ€"lookâ€" ing document, bearing the Now York postâ€"mark, was placed in his hands. Its contents seemed to him to be nothing short of a miracle ; they informed him that some investments he had made years ago in a Peruvian nitrate mine, and which he had been unable to disâ€" pose of since, had lately risen to a preâ€" mium, and were worthâ€"figuratively speakingâ€"â€"their weights in gold. Upon the strength of this good news he ha«tâ€" ened southwards, only to find that in the interval which had elapsed between the dispatch of the letter and its reâ€" ceipt the mine had been inundated, and its shares were now worthless. of an old but by no means wealthy house, he found it necessary in the course of time to seek his fortune out side of the four paternal walls. His choice like that of a good many others, fell upon the land of promise in the Far West. But he did not do so well as he expected, and in the course of one year‘s wanderings found it by no means such an easy matter to secure even a modest competence. At iength he scraped enough togethâ€" er to enable him to purchase a small cattle ranch; but his illâ€"luck attended even this venture, wihch after a time bad to be abmidoned. He next obâ€" tained an appointment as a ‘"cowboy" upon one of the neighboring farms, and for some time was busily occupied with the duiies that accompanied his new spher>.‘ Among the latter was one which took him regularly into a distant town once in every six months.
