(Great man! Why, Reuben, you don‘t know ‘nuff to cum in when it rains !"â€"Detroit Free Press. Do not build your happiness upon mere social position _ You have come out from your home, and you have looked up at a great house, and covetâ€" ed a life there, when, perhaps, at that very moment, within that house, there may have been the wringing of hands, the start of horror, and the very agony of hell. I knew such a one. Her father‘s house was plain, most of the people who came there were plain ; but, by a change in fortune such as sometimes comes, a hand had been ofâ€" fered that led her into a brilliant sphere. All the neighbors congratuâ€" lated her upon her grand prospects ; but what an exchange ! On her side it was a heart full of generous impulse and affection. On his side it was a soul dry and withered as the stubble of the field. On herside it was a father‘s house, where God was honored and the Sabbath light flooded the rooms with the very mirth of heaven. On his side was a gorgeous residence, and the coming of mighty men to be entertained there ; but within it were revelry and godlessness. Hardly had the orange blossoms of the marriage feast lost their fragrance, than the night of discontent began to cast here and there its shadow. _ The ring on the finger was only one link of an iron chain that was to bind her. eternally captive. _ Cruelties and unkindness changed all those splendid trappings into a hollow mockery, The platters of solid silver, the caskets of pure gold, the headdress of gleaming diamonds, were there ; but no God, no peace, no kind words, no Christian sympathy. The festive music that broke on the captive‘s ear turned out to be a dirge, and the wreath in the plush was a reptile coil, and the upholstery that swayed in the wind Iwas the wing of a destroying angel, and the beadâ€"drops on the pitcher were the sweat of everâ€" lasting despair ! «Now I‘m sure of it! Why, he‘s the tin peddler who cum along about four weeks ago and not only cheated me in weighing the paper bags, but he sold me three tin pans which leaked all over the cellar afore he sot out o‘sicht." \The great man fell.. Everyone saw that he was guilty, and all turned away and left him to his disgraceâ€"all but the vietim of his wiles. She erooked her forefinger at ‘him and said : During the 70 years of man‘s allotâ€" ted life the heart performs.about the same amount of work in «circulating the blood that a 2â€"horsepower engine would do if run day and night for 13 years 7 months and 14 days. You see, the heartâ€"â€"** *Good lands, but I‘ve seen that fel ler afore.!" interrupted the farmer‘s wife. He counted out the change, and she put it into her bag among the fried cakes and boiled eggs, and as she sat down beside her husband she remarked. I followed after and found a very iplainly dressed and common looking iman. holding forth to five or six passenâ€" .gers who had gathered areund him. As we came up he was saying ; The great man_ turned to see who had spoken, and she raised her hands and continued : "«Them pans was leven cents apiece Gimme 33 cents !" ut Like the Roman Empie His Fall Came at Last. I heard an animated conversation going or at the farther end of the car, but as Iâ€"was reading I paid little .atâ€" tention until an wld farmer, whose wife.sat just behind me came ohack #from the group and «aid : ‘What‘s the ase?" he protested. "I «didn‘t believe i# either until I heard chim talk. Come up and listem." "I don‘t keer about the sun." ~"But you oster. The sun kas got a ‘heap to do with our farm, I guess. Do ,you know how much air you breathe in at every breath ?" ‘"All L want to." <‘Of course, but he‘ll tell you jest how many feet. It‘s the interesting: «est thing I â€"ever heard. You don‘t know how fur it is to the mson, but he‘s got it right down to miles and rods. You don‘t know why there‘s.a tide in the ocean, but he. does. He kin . tell you exactly how many bones you have in your body. He knows more in a iminit than our postmaster does in a week. Come along and hear him." How many rivalries and unhappinessâ€" es among those who seek in social life their chief happiness ! It matters not how fine you have things ; there are "‘Sn,lly, vyou orter hear what tthat felleras sayin‘! I‘ve learned more in ‘five minutes than L ever knew in all mylife before." "*Who is he ?" she asked. ""Dunno his name, but he‘s smarter‘n ia steel trap." *What‘s he sagin 1" ‘$Well, it‘s allavout scieuces and ithings. _ He says the sun is 1,000,000 miles nearer the cearth than it ased to ibe." I don‘t believe it," she bluntly re plied.. ‘. _ ~> A False Standard A GREAT MAN. One of the most difficult things in life is to regard a situation, see an object, or consider an event from a point of view not our own. The strongâ€" er our own personality, the| more deâ€" cided our opinions, the more difficult becomes this generosity of mental gaze. The canny Scot, while wishing for the power to see ourselves as others see us, might wisely have wished also that we might see others as they see themselves. To have opiniong. based on calm thought and . quiet judgment, and to hold unto them, is a very good thing indeed. To insist upon your friend, who is of different temperaâ€" ment and differently cireumstanced, assuming those same opinions is surely insular and narrow. _ Insist upon your right to hold to your own point of view for yourself, and accord to your friend or your friendly enemy the same privi{ lege. Define in your own understandâ€" ing the difference between lionlike 4. They‘re the cheapest, for they‘re guaranteed to give satisfaction, or your money is returned. They‘re perfectly easy in their actionâ€"no griping, no disturbance. 6 They cure Constipation, Indigestâ€" ion, Bilious Attacks, Sick or Bilious Headaches, and all derangements of the liver, stomach and bowels. I have been writing to several breedâ€" ers of Jersey cattle to see if I could buy some animals for some of my friends. _I ask them for a pedigree and the amount of milk and butter per cow for the year, also a Babcock test of the milk, for I must know someâ€" thing about these animals if I buy them. _ Every one of these breeders are completely bankrupt of all knowledge on these points. _ They know scarcely more about their cows and can give a buyer no more facts than a man in the next county. They don‘t seem to know anything about the test, and here they are pretending to breed dairy cattle for dairymen. _ My opinion of a great many breeders of dairy catâ€" tle is, that they are grossly ignorant of dairy ideas and the wants of dairy farmers. _ If I had such cattle for sale, Tiwould ascertain the first thing the amount of milk they gave per day and get a good average test of the butter fat in the milk. Then I would test the skim milk and butterâ€"milk, so I could show a would be purchaser that I was not a blank ignoramus about my own cattle. Then I would get a printâ€" ed pedigree of each cow, bull or calf and send them out to inquirers. I would proceed on the principle that it was to my interest to give an inquirer all the information about my cattle that he might want, and I would have that information handy to use. What is the use of pretending to be a breedâ€" er of the finest breeds of cattle in the world and act more dull and stupid than a serub cow. Can you tell me ? We give it up. There are a great many people who are mighty afraid somebody will know something about their cattle and that they have cattle to sell. 3. Their effects last. There‘s no reâ€" action afterward. The English lord, moving in the very highest sphere, was one day found seated, with his chin on kis hand, and his elbow on the windowâ€"ill, looking out, and saying : "I wish I could exchange places with that dog." A Hint to Breeders of Dairy Cattle. f In our own experience we have found that a great many breeders of dairy cattle seemed to have a very inâ€" adequate idea of what they should do to satisfy purchasers as to a knowledge of their cattle. We recently received a letter from an Towa dairyman from which we take the following extract to emphasize what we have been saying : Mere social position will never give happiness to a woman‘s soul. I have walked through the halls of those who despiseithe common people ; I have sat at their banquets ; I have had their friendship ; I have heard. from their own lips the story of their disquietude; and Iitell the young men and . women that they who build on mere social positior their immortal happiness, are building on sand. with cedar. _ Well watered; small creek flowing r.hg)ugh itin which ate abundance of trout.
