Born: 1826, Died: 1862
Married: Anna Elizabeth Kalbfleisch
Eckhard Kalbfleisch, Joachim's older brother, came to Canada with his family from Eulersdorf Germany in 1848. In 1850 Eckhard came to Waterloo where he purchased lot 15 (on the west side of King S and south of the school grounds) from Elias Snider. On this lot he erected a substantial three-story brick home, fitting out the lower floor as a a hotel which he called "The Traveller's House". Just seven years later, the premises now called "The Waterloo Hotel" was advertised for sale. No explanation for this offer to sell is given but subsequent developments indicate that Eckhard was in failing health. The hotel was not sold at that time and Eckhard died in 1862 and was interred in Mt Hope Cemetery, one of the first burials recorded there. The hotel continued in business and the next owner was Charles Noecker. It appears, that while Kalbfleisch was ailing, Noecker helped run the place and then married the widow Anna Kalbfleisch.
