Wilfred Hilliard was the son of Dr William Hilliard and a grandson of Thomas Hilliard, one of the founders of the insurance industry in Waterloo. As a young man he spent three years serving in World War I as a member of the 118th Battalion and in the Signal Corp. When he returned to Waterloo, he joined the Dominion Life Assurance Company that his Grandfather had helped form. He spent 40 years in the company retiring as associate actuary. He was a member of the Methodist church (First United) where he took an active part as steward, trustee and elder. For recreation he was a member of the Waterloo Curling Club and in the summer was an avid lawn bowler being on the provincial championship team in 1950.

Ellis Little was a local historian, who was the principal of Elizabeth Ziegler Public School. On his retirement, he invested much of his time in researching and writing about Waterloo's history. The Ellis Little Papers consist of extensive notes, papers and historical works.
