Born: 1857, Died: 1933
Married: Sarah Anthes, Martha Snider

M. S. Hallman was born in 1857 in the village of Washington in Wilmont Township. As a young man he taught school for a few years and then worked in a bookstore in Berlin. In 1894 he had an opportunity to work for David Bean who owned and published the Waterloo Chronicle. But soon after, in 1895, he siezed the chance to become accountant and office manager in the J. B. Snider Furniture Company. It was while working here that he met his second wife Martha Snider, the daughter of his boss. Just two years later Hallman joined the Actuarial Department of the Mutual Life Assurance Company and by 1907 had become Chief Actuary (retired 1925). He bought a new home at 41 Allen St E in 1902 and his hobby was flower gardening around the new home. At various times he received civic recognition for his horticultural excellence, even in 1932, a year before his death.
