Born: 1777 Died: 1862
Married: Magdalena Bauman

John Good’s grandfather, also named John, was born in Switzerland, in 1731. Because of religious difficulties that the Mennonites faced with the new Protestant denominations, the family came to American in 1737 and settled on part of William Penn’s land (later called Pennsylvania). John was born in 1777 on his father’s farm. He later married Magdalena Bauman and in 1818, John decided that he and his family would follow the migrants to new lands in the German Tract in Upper Canada. He purchased a farm from David Ellis that was located about a mile north of the newly-erected grist mill of Abraham Erb. A laneway was cut out of the forest from the farm south to Erb’s Road and the grist mill. This laneway followed a ridge of land that remained dry and serviceable all year round. Later it became one of the three original streets in the early village and was given the name Albert St. Besides being a prosperous farmer, John Good was known as the “healer” by his neighbours and he imparted his knowledge to his son Joseph who became Waterloo’s first doctor.
