Conrad Gonder was one of the early settlers in Waterloo. Even before the Hoffman Survey had been completed in 1855, Gonder had constructed a two storey brick and frame building at the corner of what later became King Sts. and John St. Here he operated a small cooper’s shop. However, in c1854 he decided to remodel part of the building and then opened an inn which he called the Waterloo Exchange. Gonder’s stay as hotel keeper was short-lived because in 1855 he sold the place to Christian Reichard, who, in turn, sold it to George Doerbecker in 1856. Gonder moved up to Erb St. W. and Queen (Regina) St. where he operated a livery stable, probably the one that was part of the Bowman Hotel.
