Born: 1841, Died: 1921
Married: Elizabeth

In early Waterloo, Julius Germann operated a harness and saddlery shop. The business must have been quite successful because, in the 1880s, he was able to build a substantial brick home on the corner of Herbert and George Sts. This area along George St., at this time, was a premier residential part of town where citizens with monetary resources chose to live. About 1889 Germann decided to make a change in his life’s work. He opted to enter the hotel keeping business, purchasing the Market Hotel on Albert St. across from the Town Hall and the local fire station. This hotel was being sold because owner Frederick Heuther had defaulted on his mortgage. Germann assumed the mortgage responsibilities and perhaps to increase the cash flow, in 1901 sold his large home on George St. to Levi Stauffer and moved his family into the hotel. In 1906, Germann sold the Market Hotel to John and Elizabeth Mayer.
