The Froelich family, which included Valentine, Henry and Conrad, were early residents of the village of Waterloo. In 1851 Valentine, along with brother Henry, were listed in the census of that year as weavers. After 1855 when the Hoffman Survey was completed, Valentine purchased Lots 10, 11 and 12 on the east side of King St. S. and south of Beaver Creek (later Laurel Creek). There he constructed a building that he opened as a public house called the Golden Swan Hotel. This business, after several owners, became the City Hotel, a landmark in Waterloo until it was torn down in 1990
