Born: 1852, Died: 1920
Married: Catharine Miller

John Fischer was one of the most noted butchers in early Waterloo. As a young man, he learned the trade while working for Frederick Scholte, another butcher and farmer in the early village. About 1871 young Fischer opened a small butcher shop on the west side of King St N., but soon moved across the street where he rented Daniel Snider’s general store and post office that had recently been vacated. In 1886 he purchased the building and renovated the interior making it the most up-to-date shop of the day. He married Catherine Miller and they lived in a home they built on Queen (Regina) St. In 1918 Fischer sold the store and business to his son Edgar, who had been helping his father for a number of years. As part of his business John had been a drover, buying and selling cattle, sometimes dealing with railway carloads of livestock. This business gave him an extensive acquaintance with many farmers in the district. J.B. Fischer was very interested in politics. He was on Town Council for 27 years and was elected Mayor in 1908 and again in 1912-13. He also spent 12 years on County Council, being twice named Reeve and then Warden.
