Born: 1868, Died: 1947
Married: Anna Schneider

Louis Dietrich was born in St. Agatha in 1868. He was apprenticed as a blacksmith in 1888 and in 1892 opened a shop in his home village. The next year he expanded his shop in order to handle the John Deere Implement Agency. He decided in 1904 that a move to Waterloo would be beneficial to his business career. Dietrich rented, then purchased the old J. B. Snider Furniture Building and, as cars made their appearance started an automobile garage. In 1915 he became the first automobile dealer in Waterloo, securing a sub agency for the Ford Motor Co. In 1916 he was appointed by the Dodge Co. to sell their cars in Waterloo County. He continued the farm implement business in a separate part of the building. Shortly after he moved to Waterloo he purchased the large frame home on Erb St E. that had been constructed by Charles Kreutziger and recently vacated. The Waterloo Club moved to The Lewis Hotel (Waterloo Hotel). He was an active member of various Roman Catholic institutions including St Louis R.C. Church, St Louis Separate School Board, Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was also active in local politics being an Alderman for several years and elected as mayor for 1929-1930.
