Samuel S. Bowers, a son of cabinet maker Samuel Bowers Sr., was born on a farm near the village of Berlin in 1836. Samuel Jr. received his medical degree from the University of New York in 1856. He, briefly, set up a practice in Plattsville. But in 1858 he moved to Waterloo where he established an office in the home of John Hoffman on King St. S. He married Hannah Flowers but they didn’t stay long in Waterloo. In 1860 they to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. There Samuel became the manager of the Lamartine Peat Company. After two years in this business, he decided to return to the practice of medicine in the same town. On his death in 1900, the local paper observed that “Fond du Lac has had few more popular citizens and the respect in which he was held was well-merited.”
