Born 1869, Died 1937
Married: Minna Schmiedel
Daniel Bohlender’s father, Andrew, bought the A.F. Code General Store c. 1880 which was located in the retail section of the Alexandra Hotel on the corner of King St S and William St. E. For some time it was called the “Red and White Store.” Dan was born in 1869 and when he came of age he worked in his father’s store, becoming accustomed to grocery storekeeping. He married Minna Schmiedel a daughter of another grocery store owner just a little further north up King St. Around 1915 he decided to become involved in another facet of the retail business. Some general store owner had now found it advantageous to specialize in one line of endeavor. So, to this end, Bohlender purchased the grocery store owned by Mrs. Lorenz located behind the Devitt-Snider Block on Erb St. W. He remodeled the place and opened a shoe store. In it he featured Valentine and Martin footwear that was made in the local factory located on Cedar St. E. (Bridgeport Rd.) He was interested in politics, being Deputy Reeve of Waterloo Township in 1917 and Reeve in 1919. As well, he became a Town Alderman and was elected Mayor in 1920-21 and again in 1932. He was also one who supported an afternoon market at the local venue. In these public endeavours he was known for his aggressiveness and independence of thought. He had many other interests being a member of the Waterloo Music Society, the local Board of Trade, the IOOF and the Evangelical Church.
