- This is an action shot of Rudy Hernado serving the tennis ball in the 1973 Western Ontario Open Tennis Championship at the Waterloo Tennis Club. Hernado won the Men's Singles Championship in 1973.
The Western Ontario Open Tennis Championship (The Western) originated in 1914 and was considered a high level tournament attracting players from all over Canada and the United States. In 1939 Waterloo won the bid to hold the tournament. The tournament was held at the Waterloo Tennis Club again in 1954, then from 1963-1988, with the exception of 1971 and 1977.
