Notes

Volunteer Service for Seniors began in 1976 and was organized by the Erb Street Mennonite Church. It was originally called Project H.E.A.R., Helping Erb Street Area Residents. Boundary limitations were defined as Westmount Road, William Street, Caroline Street and Erb Street, including the short streets on the north side of Erb Street. As of 1992 it had grown to serve all of the City of Waterloo. In November 1988, the name was changed to Volunteer Service for Seniors. Services included transportation, accompaniment for shopping, shopping service, visiting and daily telephone checks.

The programmed was sponsored and completely funded by the Erb Street Mennonite Church until 1989 when some funding became available through the Ministry of Community and Social Services, as well. It was directed by a programme director who was directly responsible to a congregational board, who in turn was responsible to the total church membership.

VSS ceased as of September 7, 1993 when the City of Waterloo, Home Support Services assumed responsibilities as outlined in an agreement.
