This machine was owned by Brookdale-Kingsway Nurseries in Bowmanville Ont. The tractor was a tree digger adaptation that was equipped with a root undercutting shoe mounted on the right side and controllable for depth. It also had Arps track equipment on the rear tires, concealed by shielding in the photo. The digging shoe was eventually equipped with shaker extensions to remove dirt around the roots. It does not appear that the shaker is installed yet when the photo was taken. Axle extensions were used to add height clearance under the rear housings. The digger frequently needed to be pulled by an additional tractor as steering control was marginal and the drag of the shoe was offset. I was a mechanic on this equipment for a brief period in the early 70's at which time the tractor was very old but still doing its work. It was custom constructed along with several other unique machines by the nursery themselves. The nursery was a major employer in Bowmanville and the driver may be identified by someone there, he is before my time.
