Broker 825-9492 CPPA launches principles for forestry plans by Darren MacDonald The News The 'Canadian Pulp and Paper Association (CPPA) has released a list of "guiding prin- ciples" it pledges to adhere to when devising its forest land management plans. Tony Rotherham, Director of the CPPA's Woodland Division, says that the federal govern- ment has already set guidelines for effluent discharge. "So we thought it would be useful to do something similar for the other major part of our operations, namely forest man- agement," says Rotherham. Among other things, the guidelines commit the 59- member organization to allow- ing more public input in the formation of forest manage- ment agreements. : "In the past, the practice has been that the company would devise a management plan in accordance with government guidelines, and then place it out for public review,.' he says. "Because four years down the road, it doesn't look too good for Schreiber, depending on what happens with the mine. If we don't get some tourism here, you might as well kiss Schreiber good- bye." "Right now, we want to find out what the town thinks," says Don McArthur, who, along with Gionet, is trying to get the venture off the ground. McArthur, who runs the Voyageur, says that what they have in mind could easily cost around $1°million, but, in terms of getting government funding, it doesn't pay to think small. "If you have a project that's going to cost $25-50,000, the government probably wouldn't look at it because it wouldn't have enough of an impact," he says. "But if you wanted to put up a whole theme park, now you're talking something with a major impact, something that might bring people into the area--so the government's continued on page 5 TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD.
