Page 6, News, Tuesday, November 5 1991 High school students get a taste of real world by Paula Moon and Darren MacDonald The second annual "Job Shadow" program, held last Tuesday and Thursday in The program allows senior Schreiber and Terrace Bay, students from Lake Superior went off without a hitch, said High School to spend a day organizer Leslie Dickson. "shadowing" someone working in a field the student is interest- ed in. Job shadowing was begun last year by the Schreiber-Ter- race Bay Community Futures Organization, which procured more than 200 placements (including one at The News) for the 88 students participating this year. That's 21 more students than participated last year. "We feel (job shadowing) gives students an opportunity that isn't otherwise there," Dickson says. "It allows the student a chance to see what the work world is like, and what a better education can provide." Dickson says the program lets students know what kinds of jobs are available locally, and what kind of training is necessary to get them. "And it gives the employers an opportunity to display the jobs to the students," she says. This year's placements included bigger resource employers, such as Kimberly Clark and Minnova, and small- er industries, such as hairdress- ing and dentistry. "Almost everyone got their first choice," Dickson said, adding she expects the program will be held again next year. News.
