"It was hot in the room, and I must have dozed off," said Smart. "I guess my cigarette fell down between the cushions of the couch." Smart did not notice any problem znd left the apartment to visit a friend. It was then that a neighbour noticed smoke coming from the apartment. Smart returned to the room and threw the cushions off the couch, but remained on the scene. Debbie Cole, superintendent of the complex, was immedi- ately notified by one of the res- idents. She and her husband Harry (Mac) made a number of attempts at entering Smart's apartment before bringing her to safety. "My mother, my wife and I tried three or four times to get in," said Mac Cole, "but the place was really thick with . smoke. I finally got in through the back door." Cole entered the room, but. could not find Smart. He was able to locate her on his second attempt, however, and move her from the smoke-filled area. "The second time I went in and found her. I just pulled her out and kind of shuffled her to the door," explained Cole. The Schreiber Fire Depart- ment and Ambulance arrived at this time. Smart was taken to the hospital and kept overnight for observations. According to Barbara Hop- per, Smart's granddaughter, the damage to the apartment was minimal. "There was mor2 smoke than anything," said Hopper. "But she really gave us quite a scare." "Well, there's certainly one thing." seid Smart, "I've quit smcxing. . . I've quit for good."
