Dr. Mike McCausland, 80, dies in hospital named in his honor by Rob Cotton The News Dr. Mike McCausland, Terrace Bay's first doctor, died in the hospital bearing his name on Tuesday, March 5, after a lengthy illness. He was 80. Dr. McCausland, a Canadian Navy veteran, arrived in May, 1946, to begin his duties as physician for the men constructing the Kimberly-Clark mill. "He was a very humble small town physician but what he did in his day would make what modern graduates do seem pretty simple and benign." said Dr. Wilkes of Terrace Bay. ; Dr. McCausland's first hospital facility was a small frame building situated in the general area of the Moose Hall. It housed two cots and small woodburning stove. He described it as "a strange building" because of the yearly additions that caused it to grow in the general direction of Jackfish. Combining his medical knowledge and his resourcefulness Dr. Mike overcame many of the difficulties created by the conditions of the" time. He solved one problem, a leaking instrument sterilizer, by replacing it with his. wife's pressure cooker. As conditions for both work and living improved people settled in to Terrace Bay and families began to grow. Continued on page 2 va TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD.
