Page 3, News, Tuesday, January 15, 1991 Schreiber squash player to play in the 1991 Ontario Winter Games by Rob Cotton The News Speed and agility are necessary to be a good squash player but according to Domenic Figliomeni of Schreiber, member of the Thunder Bay Junior Squash Team, endurance is the real key to success. A squash match consists of at least three games and as many as five. A match lasts for over an hour and the players are constantly on the move. Bay last year. Squash Team. Squash is a fast game "It is a fast. game," Figliomeni:said, " the ball is moving very quickly." As member of the junior team Figliomeni, 14, will be taking part in the Ontario Winter Games to be held in Barrie, March 5-10. He has been playing squash for about year and a half. His road to a place on the team began when he won the first tournament he entered, the Junior Division Championship at the Fresh Air Hit It tournament held in Thunder Because of Figliomeni was offered the opportunity to try-out for the Ontario Winter Games Junior In a tournament that would -- determine the teams players, he lost a deciding match between himself and another player. However, the skill levels of both players was so close a rematch was held. Figliomeni took that match , winning three of the five games and secured his place on the team. Gerry Mikalauskas of Schreiber is working with Figliomeni to hone his skills and prepare him for the games. His father, Joe Figliomeni, has also been helping him train. Training is important this win -- Figliomeni is on the squash courts at he Terrace Bay Recreation Centre two to three nights a week. He is also taking part, with the team, in other toumaments as part of his training and to gain experience in tournament play. He will be going to one in Thunder Bay on January 25 and in February the he and the team will be in Winnipeg to compete against the Winnipeg Junior Team. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Ontario March of Dimes, a not-for-profit organization that assists adults with physical disabilities. The annual Winter Fund Raising Campaign which runs from January 2nd to February 15th, 1991. The March of Dimes' Thunder Bay region, which includes the counties of Kenora, Rainy River and Thunder Bay, will undertake community campaigns to raise a goal of $19,000. Forty years ago, a group of "Marching Mothers" took to the streets to raise money in hopes of funding a cure for polio: Today, thousands of volunteers in 300 communities across Ontario volunteer their time to raise money in support of adults with 4Oth anniversary for March of Dimes physical disabilities. Money raised in the 1991 campaign will support the March of Dimes' three major services which include: Independent Living Assistance, Employment Services and Assistive devices. The 1991 Fund Raising Campaign which provides support to all disabled adults in Ontario, has set the highest goal of the campaign to date. With the assistance of dedicated volunteers across the province, they will work towards a provincial Community Campaign goal of $589,000 and an Annual Fund Raising goal of 42.4 million. Training programs to be offered in Marathon The North Shore of Superior Training Programs are offering two programs for employee upgrading starting in 1991. An 80 hour Part-time Basic Welding Program will be starting Jan 26 in Marathon, at the High School, to provide an Introductory Skill Develop- ment Course. Ten seats for this course will be offered, and a waiting list will be created as week. A 60 Hour Basic Electronics Program will be offered starting Feb 2 in Marathon at the High School. program is the first module of a 360 hour program but will be delivered on a part-time basis on Saturdays for 6 hours per Completion date will be April 20, 1991 for this first module.
