"This money will get us back on our feet from the initial delay of building a school and not deriving the pupil population that we normally would have had, " he said At the time the board had to build a new school with no extra money being given to it and with out being able to tax Hemlo. It actually wound up with far smaller portion of the student population than it has in other towns, Matys explained. A new school was required for an increasing population in the area but the board had difficulty in obtaining a site. Because there were only a few portables available fewer children attended the separate school than the public school. - "We missed the main wave of new students. They went to the public school and they stayed there," Matys said. _ The public board was able to extend its boundaries to include Hemlo and was able to tax it right away, he continued. The towns of Marathon and Manitouwadge received a one time grant from the provincial government to assist them with the rapid growth of the time. "Since then we've been saying, "What about ws"," 1 "This money is going to offset some of those up front costs we've been carrying as a liability from that time." The North of Superior Separate School Board, under a new law established a year ago, is now able to tax Hemlo. Matys said the school is slowly building the student population as new people come into the area. Schreiber is prepared to peel off winter blues Getting every grouch on a couch to stand up and peel off those winter blahs won't be diffi- cult once they've seen the pro- gram for this year's winter carni- val in Schreiber. "We're trying to get everybody involved," said Bert Logan, chair- man of this year's event. "We have activities for chil- dren and teenagers, dances for all ages, game nights for all ages and lunches every day through the - week." The 1991 Peel Off Winter Carnival is scheduled for the week of February 22 - March 3. Spud the Couch Potato The carnival's mascot, Spud the Couch Potato, will set the pace and be a shining example of the theme, Don't be a Grouch Get Off the Couch. Watch Spud carefully through out the week. There is going to be a contest to see if anybody can recognize him. Opening with fireworks This year the carnival will be opened with a fireworks display. Logan said the open cere- monies will be held at the Recreation Centre but the fire- works can probably be seen from anywhere in town. The judging of the Beard and Moustache Growing Contest will held during the opening. Contestants much show up at the Recreation Centre, clean shaven before January 3, to be eli- gible. There will be a Challenger's Bonspiel at the Curling club now the rink is once again available. Logan said ice sculptures will be created at either end of town to advertise the carnival. Sculptures are also expected to appear in front yards once again. "We had some beautiful ones last year, 15 or so, and we're hop- ing to get that many or more this year," he said. A booklet outlining the final schedule of events will be sent to every home in Schreiber early in January. "Also, people in Pays Plat, Rossport and Terrace Bay are most welcome to participate and --- we hope to see them out, said.
