On Monday October 1, Pouliot was named Mines Minister with responsibilities for Francophone affairs. Pouliot is pleased to be on the cabinet and confident he is quali- fied for both positions. Familiar territory "Its an area I am familiar with," Pouliot said, referring. to his job as Mines Minister. He pointed out that before his politi- cal career, he worked in mines for about twenty years. "It is related to the riding (Lake Nipigon) and it is related to the north," he said, adding he is glad to be working for mining once again, as well as his other position in Francophone affairs. Pouliot, whose mother tongue is french, admits that events such as the failure of Meech Lake and English-only resolutions in some Ontario municipalities makes the Francophone affairs position a touchy one, but says that the lan- guage issue always tends to be controversial. In the delivery of french ser- vices, Pouliot says there are no great changes in the works, adding that the government will continue to provide french-lan- guage services in areas where the numbers of french-speaking peo- ple warrants it. Pouliot says that the new cabi- net of Premier Bob Rae is a better representation of the populace than past governments. "It's people you would meet if you went for a walk," he said. The cabinet has a record eleven women, and six members from northern Ontario which, Pouliot noted, doubles the previ- ous record of three northern Ontario ministers. : Pouliot also pointed out that the jobs given to northern MPPs are prominent ones, giving the example of Floyd Laughren, from Sudbury, who was named Deputy Premier and Treasurer, - "Easy to talk to" Tom Dickson, General Manager of Minnova Mining in Schreiber says that he doesn't expect major changes -with Pouliot in the Mines Ministry and believes that improvements will continue. "He's always been easy to talk to and I'm sure he will continue to work hard," he said. Although some critics have said the NDP government will scare business away, Dickson does not see that happening in the mining industry. "Responsible government is responsible government and I think that's what we'll get," he said adding that mines don't "pick-up and move" because the government's philosophy is dif- ferent. Moose hunting begins by Greg Giddens the News With the passing of the long weekend, another moose Mites season has begun. There are no major changes to hunting regulations for the 1990 season according to conservation officer coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources, Rick Baldwin. With no major changes, Baldwin is hopeful that there will be less problems caused by con- fusion, saying that hunters should have a good grasp of the regula- tions by now.
