It seems that youths have taken to jumping from a 40-foot rock cliff into deep water with TUESDAY AUGUST 7, 1990 The Terrace Bay-Schreiber Boyd Doucet.and Adam Sutherland were jumping into the Aguasabon River near the Falls. Although these boys were not, some youths have been placing rocks in rocks in their pockets. The youths are getting to this cliff by crossing the Aguasabon River and walking down a trail. The trail is about a 10-15 minute walk from Aguasabon Trailer Park. Two of the three major parties have already chosen candidates in the Lake Nipigon District to run in the next election. Incumbent member of the provincial parliament (MPP) Gilles Pouliot will be running again as the New Democratic' Party candidate. Mr. Pouliot was nominated to carry the hopes of the NDP into the next election in Nipigon on May 6. New to the electoral arena is Judy Tinnes, a public health nurse for the Nipigon area and a resi- dent of Red Rock. Although the Liberal Party has not yet held its nomination meeting, Mrs. Tinnes will be representing the Liberals because she was the only person to file her intention to run with the party before the July 14 dead- line. The Progressive Conservative party has not yet chosen a candi- date of the Lake Nipigon District. The Liberal campaign got off to a blazing start two weeks ago, when a small fire broke out in the campaign office on Front Street in Nipigon. Apparently the fire was the result of a electrical problem. The Nipigon Volunteer Fire Department responded quickly, preventing serious damage. There were no injuries. Aside from the small fire, Tinnes says the campaign plans are going well. "We're getting there, both continued on page 8 SUPERIOR-SHORELINE INSURANCE LTD. The existing dump is supposed to be used only by nearby resi- dents in Rossport and Selim. Unfortunately, people from municipalities such as Schreiber and Terrace Bay continue to bring their garbage out to Rossport. There is no gate, and the dump is accessible 24 hours a day. Both Terrace Bay and Schreiber have a municipal site available for dumping that they are supposed to use. "We wouldn't have a problem if we were operating only for the people of the area," said Ken McWatters, a Senior Lands Technician with the Ministry of Natural Resources. "The people in the organized areas are sup- posed to use the sites where their money goes." Residents in Terrace Bay and Schreiber pay municipal land taxes. Part of this money is used to provide a specific dump site for the towns. Yet people in Rossport and Selim pay provin- hreiber and Terrace residents creatin roblems cial land taxes, and the MNR is responsible for maintaining their site. When the new dump is com- pleted, there will be specific dumping times, and a gate will be installed to keep people out after dumping hours. The MNR is hoping that this new system will keep the residents in Terrace Bay and Schreiber from dumping, since the Rossport dump will then no longer be accessible in the evening. "There shouldn't be a need for people to use the (Rossport) dump. I don't say it's wrong, they just don't understand where the money comes from," said McWatters. "As soon as people from the municipalities go out there it defeats the purpose." Presently, the Rossport dump is a mess. Many people aren't throwing their garbage in the trench. Normally, a vehicle could -be backed to the edge of the trench to dump the garbage. Now, garbage litters the edge of the trench for at least ten feet. Once one person leaves garbage outside the trench, most others see Rossport...page 2 Air ambulance 'Bandage-3' touched down at McCausland Hospital last week to pick up a patient.
