Photo Monica Wenzlaff New firearms law could encourage law breaking Portions of the federal govern- ment's proposed firearms legisla- tion could actually promote law breaking, says the Ontario Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). A 400 per-cent hike in the cost of Firearms Acquisition Certificates (FAC) is unwarranted and will have a negative effect on the control of and legal use of firearms across Canada, said Rick Morgan, OFAH executive vice president. "I am convinced that the $50 fee, by itself, will prompt many otherwise honest Canadians to break the law," he said. "Firearms will be illegally sold and loaned to friends acquain- tances unwilling to shell out $50- and that is wrong. In addition to the fee hike, proposals to implement a 28-day waiting period for FAC approval, and the requirement of pho- tographs and references, may further complicate firearms con- trol, he said. The OFAH is also concerned that new limitations on clip sizes may render many previously common and lawful firearms use- less. It's unknown if smaller clips are available for many currently law abiding citizens. > BALLARD HELENE (ELAINE) Age 80 years, of Birchwood Terrace died J Yd Zyl 990. at. Port Arthur General Hospital.
