By Norm Gladish Fire Prevention Technician Sometime this July or August, residents of Manitouwadge will be able to view the spectacle of a large forest fire from their door steps - in complete safety. The smoke they see will be from the Morley Lake Prescribed Burn, about -12 km southeast of town, not far from Agonzon Lake. Prescribed burning is a resource management tool used by foresters, biologists, and other land use managers. It is the planned, intentional use of fire under specific, controlled condi- tions, usually to prepare a site for seeding or planting after logging. It may also be used to enhance wildlife habitat or maintain fire dependent vegetation. In the case of the Morley Lake cutover, there were several rea- sons to select fire as a preferred treatment. Aside from being the least expensive means of site preparation, the elimination of fine fuel slash, competing vegeta- tion and reduction of heavy slash will provide for: -baring the soil for hand plant- ing -increasing the available area to planting by removing undesir- able species such as balsam fir -improved survival and growth of both artificial and natural regeneration by removing com- peting vegetation -conversion of the species on the site to help reduce future bud- "worm activity (the area had been ravaged by spruce budworm prior Schreiber Mixed Slowpitch Standings Games played Pistols Stray Cats Neon Knights Texaco Stars Winston Lakers Misfits Thunderbirds Catch 22 Deadheads Birch's C. Balsam fir is becoming increas- ingly difficult to market as either saw logs or pulpwood. The Morley Lake site was pre- pared for burning through a com- bination of harvesting, tramping, and chemical site preparation. Harvesting was done by mechani- cal and conventional means. Subsequently, two D-8 tractors were used to knock down remain- ing trees that were unfit for har- vesting, such as balsam fir killed by budworm. This tramping action concen- trates forest fuel on the ground, resulting in a hotter, cleaner burn. The dozers also established fire breaks around the perimeter of the cutover in the form of trails cleared to bare soil. Aerial spraying of chemical herbicide was the final treatment. This was done to reduce "green- ing up" of the site. Green leaves reduce the effectiveness of a burn by retaining moisture that slows the spread of the fire. | REMEMBER DEADLINE for ads & articles for the following issue Thursdays 5 P.M. Page 7, News, Tuesday, June 26, 1990 This week in fire Fire is a natural process in the life of a forest. It has created a healthy combination of various aged stands and mix of tree species since forests have first grown. It has always been one of nature's means of removing dead and diseased trees, making way for new growth by releasing nutrients into the soil in the form of ash. Fire can open up a thickly treed area, letting in sunlight that encourages the growth of shrubs and grasses. Wildlife species such as moose and deer benefit from this new vegetation. Prescribed fire is a viable site preparation method, increasingly used in forested areas of North America. Carefully used, it can ensure the continued growth of healthy forests.
