Page 11, News, Tuesday, May 1, 1990 Disability Action Group President Shirley Mikus opened the April meeting of D.A.G. by paying tribute to the Vice President, Pat Auger, on the excellent job he had carrying on in her absence. Three members nad responded to an invitation to attend a Seminar on Positive Aging, to be held in Birchwood Terrace Wednesday, April 25th. This is intended to create a forum for the concerns of seniors including cur- rent development of services for seniors and to focus on senior's independence. Ongoing _ meetings on "Networking" with representa- tives from each of the service providers in this area was explained. Listing the representa- tives involved, Networking is intended to avoid not only over- lapping of services, but also that some needs do not slip through unattended. The President and Peggy Thompson will alternate in attending. The Human Services Festival to be held in Schreiber May 3 was also discussed by D.A.G members. Their decision was to forego entering a booth in favor of maintaining their previous commitment to Canada Day activities and the Fall Fair. A motion was unanimously passed to make a $5,000.00 to the Council (s) of Schreiber and/or Terrace Bay after the purchase by one or both, of a special vehicle for the transportation of disabled persons in the communities of Jackfish, Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport to be used to help defray the capitol cost of such a vehicle. The Terrace Bay Town Engineer, Mr. R. Mikkonen, will be attending a seminar in Thunder Bay April 25th on the Ontario Building Code. A letter will be sent to Mr. Mikkonen to encourage the study of articles of the Building Code pertaining to accessibility. Letters had been sent to the Councils of Schreiber and Terrace Bay reminding them of places that still need improve- ments in accessibility so that when the Handitransit begins to operate, people can avail them- selves of the service. Mary Middaugh accepted the job as Nominating Chairman. Elections will be held at the May meeting. Pat Auger and Pam Jones had both written in regard to forming a District Chapter of the Diabetic Association. Several members met with Claudette Quarrel from the Secretary of State's office and reported on that special meeting. Guest Speaker for the evening was Donna Mikeluk from the Independent Living Centre in Thunder Bay. Donna compli- mented D.A.G. as a highly orga- nized group, already at work on much that is available. Donna described the founding of the Independent Living Centre under Linda Cairns, until now they had become established in their new quarters. As an advocacy group, there are now twelve people who use this building. Interesting slides showing these workers and their areas of concern further emphasized the extent of their Centre.
