"Over the past three years, the school has proven popular with students, parents and educators," Kozyra said. "It has helped stu- dents become aware of career opportunities in science and tech- nology that exist in Northern Ontario." This year, the program will be expanded by 50 per cent to accommodate 270 students. The school will also be changed to a four-week format. The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines will pro- vide approximately $1 million to fund the school at the two Northern Ontario Universities. Combat "Planning Kits for Community Action" were presented to fifteen representatives from Thunder Bay and District communities, at a day long workshop at the Ramada Inn on March 28th. Theses kits contain many help- ful materials for local communi- ties to plan Health Promotion programs to combat substance abuse programs. Developed by the ARF, the kits include an hour long tape on alcohol and other drugs, and a step by step planning process for addressing communi- _ ty drug issues. The workshop was the result ' of local planning between the Thunder Bay District Health _ Council and the ARF. This effort however, was_ in response to the recommendation #7 of the 1988 Task Force on Illegal Drug Use in Ontario. Therein Ken Black rec- Each student who completes the four-week course of study will receive a $1,000 stipend. "The summer studies provide enriched learning for secondary school students from across the North who show special aptitude in science and technology," noted Fort William MPP and Minister of Natural Resources Lyn McLeod. "The classroom activity is combined with field trips designed to demonstrate industri- al applications of science in the northern economy." "Thunder Bay's Lakehead University will accept 90 students for this innovative program which helps stimulate our young peo- ple's desire to enhance skills which will be in great demand in the 21st century," Kozyra added. Sudbury's Laurentian University will run two programs of 90 students each, one in English and the other in French. Sudbury MPP Sterling Campbell announced the Laurentian com- ponent in Sudbury today. Application forms will be for- warded to all secondary schools in Northern Ontario. To be eligi- ble, students must intend to enroll in grades 12 or 13 in September, 1990, have parental consent, and be recommended by their princi- pal as having demonstrated abili- ty and. aptitude in science.
