Wednesday, January 17, 1990 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Eagez: Low portion of Government print contracts going to Northern Ontario companies _ A report on the printing indus- try in Northern Ontario was released today, and, as an out- come of the study, steps are already being taken to ensure that printing companies in Northern Ontario are aware of opportuni- ties to do business with govern- ment. "In the 1988-89 fiscal year, nearly 100 print shops in this part of the country received only $235,000 in salcs from the $183 million that the federal govern- ment spent nationally on print- ing," said the Honourable Tom Hockin, the federal Minister of State (Small Businesses and Tourism). "That's a little more than one- one thousandth of the federal printing expenditure," he added. "This is out of proportion, and I have put steps in motion for spe- cial seminars under the auspices of the Fed Nor/Supply and Services Canada special procure- ment initiative. These seminars are being held to familiarize members of the printing industry. in Northern Ontario in the methodology of obtaining gov- ernment contracts." The report was Commissioned by FedNor, the federal economic development initiative that encourages small business and industry in Northern Ontario. The study embraced the period since 1984, and forecasts trends in the printing industry to 1991. The study, called "A Report to Fed Health survey A major survey of about 50,000 people will begin on Jan. 8, 1990, to provide a more com- plete picture of the health of Ontario residents. The survey will provide a snapshot of the health of residents today for the health planning needs of tomorrow. The survey is funded by the Premier's Council on Health Strategy and will be completed by November 1990. Data collect- ed will be available in the spring of 1991. The information gathered will provide the Ministry of Health and other agencies, such as local health units, with a better under- standing of the social, medical and psychological factors that contribute to health. It will help planners identify health needs and develop programs including health promotion activities, It is the intention of the Premier's Council on Health Strategy that the survey be repeated every five years to doc- ument changes in the population's health status and monitor progress of the government's health goals, which are: - shifting the emphasis to health promotion and disease pre- vention; - fostering strong and support- ive families and communities; - ensuring a safe, high-quality physical environment; -increasing the number of years of good health for residents of Ontario by reducing illness, disability and premature death; and - providing accessible, afford- able and appropriate health ser- vices for all. The survey will be done by 100 Statistics Canada interview- ers who will all carry and display photo identification badges. Response to each question is voluntary and respondents not wishing to provide their names need not do so: Respondents are protected by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, which guarantees that all information collected will remain confiden- tial. Information will be checked by staff of the Ministry of Health's Freedom of Information Office before it is dent outside the ministry to ensure that no individ- ual can be identified. Therefore, information that will be used outside the ministry, for example, by public health units, wil) be screened to prevent any individual from being identi- fied. The survey will be based on an interview with one member of a household and on a self-complet- ed questionnaire that will be left behind for all family members 12 years of age and older. The survey was pre-tested dur- ing the spring in Hamilton and Peterborough, where 1,200 resi- dents were surveyed. This is the first time such an extensive health survey will be done in Ontario. Quebec did a Similar survcy in 1987 and Statistics Canada and Health and Welfare Canada conducted a joint national survey in 1978. Several major reports, such as the report by the Ontario Health Review Pancl, headed by John Evans, and the report of the Panel on Health Goals for Ontario, headed by Dr. Robert Spasoff, recommended an Ontario health survey. A toll free hotline (1-800-387- 5558) has been sct up to answer questions about the survey from the public. Nor on the Printing and Allied Industries of Northern Ontario" was done by Alphalink of Ottawa. : As well as pointing out the low portion of government work going to Northern Ontario print- ers the report recommends that the problem of skilled labour shortages in the printing industry be addressed, together with an upgrade of industry management skills. It also suggests that a sur- vey be taken to determine the interest of Northern Ontario print- ers, and those in allied business- es, in forming an industry associ- ation. Copies of the rcport may be. obtained from the Fed Nor offices in Sault Ste. Maric, Sudbury and Thunder Bay. | CORRIAVURE |! 4a | STOPPERS |623-=TIPS | 1-800-465-6844 Travel tips Book vacations soon to avoid disappointment By Joe Mykietyn The Christmas season is now over and with the coming of January 1, 1990 a whole new set of holidays is upon us. This will depend on the direct amount of people intcrested. Eight of us just returned before Christmas from a Los Angeles trip, so I have lots of back-up in saying that we had an excellent lime. In the travel industry there is always lots of new and exciting places to see and enjoy. So wherever you choose to travel in 1990 I would like to wish you a very safc and enjoy- able holiday and remember when in another country - Thou art a guest in other lands and he that treateth his host with respect shall in turn be respected - To learn to speaketh "please" and "thank you" in thy host's tongue will make thee thy hosts friend.
