They can usc alcohol and drugs to lower their. inhibition against battering. With this character build up in mind, here are some thoughts a batterer could have about his behaviour. - There is no problem. -- lam not to blame. - It happened because we were fooling around, she slipped. - We were just having an argu- ment. - She won't leave me alone. She is always nagging me. - I don't hurt her. - What I do is no one else's business. It's my wife. It's my home. - I can criticize her, but she has no business complaining about what I do. If she knew her place and did her job properly, there'd be no problem. Wife assault is not a woman's private dilemma, it is a learned behavioural problem on the. bat- terer's part. Men who batter need to realize that they are responsible for their own actions. They are hurting their wives, their children, and themselves. Men who batter need to seek counselling to change their abu- sive behaviour. There are groups for "men who choose to batter" called First Step. The Thunder Bay First Step 'number is 623- 2218 and the Marathon First Step number is 229-0607.
