Server Intervention Program Winter Carnival The Recreation Department is in the process of organizing the Winter Carnival. The dates are Feb. 23 to March 4. Any groups or individuals wishing to partici- pate should contact the Recreation Office. We have a number of ideas for events but need assistance in organizing them. This could be a very exciling event that helps pass the long, cold winter, but it requires the participation of the community groups. Crafts 'N Stuff Sale Don't forget the first annual Craft 'n Stuff Sale at the Schreiber Community Hall on Sunday, Nov. 26 beginning at 1 p.m. and running until 5 p.m. For table space or more information contact the Recreation Office at 824-2317. Outdoor Rink The outdoor rink is located beside the old fire hall and curl- ing club. As soon as the weather permits the ice will be made. A schedule of public skating and shinny hockey will be in the Rec News and posted at the rink. If anyone has a request for specific times for public skating at the rink they should contact the Rec office so it can be considered before the final schedule is for- mulated. Belair says northerners should be compensated for hardship, dedication Reg Belair, MP for Cochrane- Superior, says Northerners should be compensated for cnduring hardships, and for their dedica- tion and committment to develop- ing the north. His remarks follow the release of the Task Force on Tax Benefits for Northern and Isolated Areas Report. The report calls for all communities below the 51.05 N Latitude to no longer be eligible for certain tax benefits. Should the report be imple- mented by the federal-govern- ment, Belair said 37 communities in the riding of Cochrane- Superior will no longer be eligi- ble. A number of criteria were . examined for determining what areas should be eligible for the Northern and Isolated Areas Tax Benefit. Some of these criteria are: iso- lation, hardship, population, dis- tance to an urban centre, climate, and vegetation. Although the report proposes 2,000 communities be eliminated from their current eligibility - 75 of these jin Northern Ontario - the status of Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport will not change if the report is implemented as resi- dents of these towns currently are not eligible for the Northern and Isolated Areas Tax Benefits. "The high cost of living, the transportation costs of moving people and goods, and the general lack of services are conditions which justify this special designa- tion. He adds there is no incentive to live in the north or for medical and educational professionals or businesses to locate in the north. "Northern Ontario contributes -a great deal to the economy of Ontario. Eighty per cent of the provinces natural resources come from our area. We supply Southern Ontario with products form the pulp and paper industry, our softwood lumber and our mines. We should be compensat- ed for enduring the hardships, for our dedication and our committ- ment to developing the north," said Belair.
