Local libraries take part in Literacy Day - Sept. 8 September 8 is Literacy Day worldwide. This year is a special one because 1990 has becn declared International Literacy Year. Our literacy program is involved in several projects to celebrate this special year. You may remember the article in this paper in May describing the International Literacy Conference held at Lakehead University. We met with the dele- gation from Bunkpurugu, Ghana to compare and contrast litcracy programs in their area and McBRIDE - Mrs. Flucrette McBride, age 93 years of Terrace Bay and formerly of Schreiber, passed away in hospital on August 26, 1989. She was a life member of the CWL. Survived by children Aline (Tody Hass) and son-in-law Bernard of Hamilton, Lorne and daughter-in- law Rita of Terrace Bay, and Deloras (Babe) Spikula and son- in-law Hobden of Schreiber;, sis- ters Beatrice Potvin of Montreal, Dolly Moffatt of Owen Sound, Loraine Siefert of Hamilton and Aline Husser of California. Also survived by 27 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and nicccs and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Russell in 1963, daugh- ters Beatrice in 1973, Mima Duggan in 1989, son Casey 1988, brothers George and Henry, sis- ters Nelda and Maric. As a result of that meeting, a literacy co-ordinator from Northwestern Ontario will be going to Ghana this winter to observe their program. He will be doing presentations around our region in 1990 to celcbrate International Literacy Year. Our public librarics are also involved in the celebration. On Friday afternoon, September 8 - from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., both libraries will have special presen- tations and displays on the sub- ject of reading to your children. _ We'll have books about what to read to your kids, displays of toys and games to encourage reading and many other things helpful to parents who want to help their children become read- ers. Literacy begins at home and we want to encourage family lit- eracy. We will also, for International Literacy Year, be giving a book to cach new baby born in Terrace Bay and Schreiber and we'll include infor- mation for parcnts about reading to.children. Traditional and modern methods will be taught including culinary terms, preparation of meats, ] : poultry, fish, dairy products, soups, sauces, vegetables and menu planning. Course is open to applicants who have been out-of-school for one full year and priority for seats will be given to employees for skill upgrading or skill investment.
