This week I'll tell you if they work. A five day interior canoe trip is exciting and physically tiring, so you want your dog to behave. I decided to bring my black female Lab, Nova. She weighs about 65 pounds and fits nicely into our canoe. The first day the waters were very rough so my concentration -- had to be on paddling and waves, and not on what Nova was doing. I've found that the perfect place for my dog was behind my, in the front section of our canoe. This way I can reassure her when the water is choppy, and my hus- band can watch her from the back of the canoe. -- She was excellent in our canoe at all times. The only problem is she, like many dogs, becomes more aware of her surroundings and more protective. She is not an aggressive dog, and anyone who has seen her in obedience classes would be surprised at her response to other canoes or pco- ple on the trail. In this situation I just reassure her and put her on a stay com- mand. Once she realizes the peo- ple aren't a threat to us, she reverts to her old cheerful self. We camped on small islands whenever we stopped, so this gave me the opportunity to let her stay "off lead" on these sites. I did keep her in site and also placed an orange collar on her in case someone spotter her from the water. Black bears are very common and she is the perfect size to be mistaken for a cub, so I always have a bright collar on her in the bush. I buried any of her excrement since it is what you should do even in the bush. One thing I did do that I'm normally against, is give her scraps from our plates. Anything that is left over should be burned, but when your dog is using a lot of energy, certain foods will give them an extra pick up. She was not on her regular diet so I gave her leftover rice, eggs, bacon and stew. The problem with this is she expected it every meal and eventually I had to make her lay down about ten feet _ from us so we could eat in peace. I definitely recommend the individually packed food since it was much easier for carrying and feeding. I hope to find her a pack that she can use to carry her own food since weight is very important when you're portaging. I kept her under control at all times, even on out island camp- sites since she was very interested in the bird and duck population. Another thing that can be a prob- lem with a retriever is when you're fishing. I found out that my dog thinks she should retrieve the fish into A good dog makes for an enjoyable canoe trip the boat. So watch your dogs carefully when you're fishing. In conclusion, I'll bring my dog with me everytime. We didn't spot one bear and I'm sure she kept them away.
