Wednesday, June 21, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 Planning for Canada Day Dear Citizens of Terrace Bay: As in previous years, the Canada Day Committee for Terrace Bay has been very dili- gently working behind the scenes to create the very utmost in Canada Day Celebrations for 1989 - the last for the cighties!! We have compressed the 9 days of events of other years to 5 days of events this year, resulting in what we feel will be a smoother more fluent operation for both participants and observers. Like last year, the fireworks will be held at the Terrace Bay Beach. There shall be a two bus shuttle service leaving the Recreation Centre every 15 to 20 minutes. We would ask that you please either use this service or walk to the beach if you are plan- ning to attend. In an effort to avoid the prob- lems with alcohol that occurred last year, the committee very def- initely needs your help. With this in mind, we have changed events which involve any alcoholic bev- erages, to other days. We as well, make a direct appeal to you to refrain from tak- ing any alcoholic beverages what- soever to the beach area. Your co-operation to this end can only serve to enhance every- one's enjoyment in this event. The police department will be patrolling the beach area through- out the night. Everyone loves fireworks! Everyone loves to have fun. Use and abuse of alcohol has resulted in many fine people events to be ended prematurely! Terrace Bay is renowned throughout the Northwest for its fine Canada Day Celebrations! Let's work together in assuring more years of this tradition to our community. Please - NO ALCOHOL at the beach. Thank you so much. I remain, Sincerely Yours, John St. Amand Canada Day Chairman * P.S.-A R.LD.E. program will be in effect throughout the evening! CCCS calling for protest . Dear Editor: As you stated in a recent arti- cle of the Terrace Bay / Schreiber News, the Mineral Concentrate levels in Schreiber are now well above Ministry of Environment (MOE) guidelines. According to your report and our information, the MOE was planning to conduct a public meeting concerning the Mineral Transfer Site operating n Schreiber and producing these high levels of heavy metals in our community. We indicated that in order to get this facility out of our town, we would need the support of Schreiber residents. Now is the time! We have been trying to find out from the MOE where and when this information meeting will be held. Obviously they do not feel the same sense of urgen- cy we do, since the date for this public forum is still undetermined despite repeated inquiries on our part. Because of the lack of response in getting this site out of our community, we feel we must now give the public the opportu- nity to show their concern. We are presently organizing a demonstration march to be held on Saturday, June 24 beginning at the high school at 12:00 noon. We encourage any and all peo- ple affected by the noise and dust produced by the transfer site to march over mineral site join us. Interested residents can obtain more information by contacting the following CCCS members: Rose REnaud (824-2561), Joan LeBlanc (824-2315) or Alice Gowen. The only way to affect this kind of change is through public pressure. Let's not wait until it's too late! To do otherwise will increase the already excessive workload of your doctor. At the present time, there are two doctors serving the area. As of July 01, 1989, we will have one permanent physician and one Locun Tenens to mect your necds; however, we are sccking two additional physicians on a permanent basis. One physician, Dr. Mark Woldnik, has accepted to relocate to Terrace Bay on a permanent basis as of September 05, 1989. We are negotiating with three other prospective doctors and hope that by August 01, 1989; we will have a third permanent doctor on staff. The Hospital has been advertising through the Underserviced Placement Program. We have also contacted Medical Association's Physician Placement Program. We have also contacted Medical Schools across Canada and physicians who expressed an interest in working in Northern Ontario during the Northern Recruitment Tour held in Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto, Hamilton and London in October 1988. Dr. Geron has already visited Schreiber and is interested in establishing a practice there. You can be assured that the Board of Governors of The McCausland Hospital in conjunction with the Township Councils of Schreiber and Terrace Bay will do everything possible to attract and retain Family Physicians in the Hospital Catchment Area.
