Wednesday, May 31, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 Justice gone awry Reader says Dear Editor: As you may well be aware, there are many problems with the existing Young Offenders Act. As it stands now, murderers under the age of 18 will scrve a maxi- mum of 3 years in a youth deten- tion centre. Only 3 years for the most heinous crime known to man! In order to protect society from violent criminals and the devastation they propagate, we -- must demonstrate adequate deter- rent to violent crime. Sentences must reflect the seriousness of the crime. A prime example of justice gone awry, is the case of Edmonton's Chantelle Hamlin. Chantelle was 2 years old when she was brutally and sav- agely beaten to death by her 14 year old babysitter, in October Frenc Dear Editor; Our tolerance and understand- ing of the Franco aggression in Ontario and the rest of Canada is over! In other countries our leaders are representing Canada as a French country. We are losing our identity outside of Canada as an English speaking country. We know the truth is 95 per cent of us speak English. Inside Canada, the apathetic, 1988. Chantelle will never roller skate, swim, or play baseball like other kids. She will never gossip with the other girls about boys, or go on her first date. She will never see another sunsct. Her right to life was ruthlessly snatched away, forever. For this atrocity, the accused, if proven guilty, will be inconve- nienced for 3 years maximum, at a youth detention centre. Jim Karygiannis, MP for Scarborough - Agincourt, has put forward a Private Members Bill asking for changes to the Young Offenders Act. These changes are to include the mandatory transference of those charged with murder to adult court, and the maximum sentence raised to five years less a day. This is definitely a step in the right direction. There will be a meeting of the Attorneys General, in Charlottetown, P.E.I., on June 15th 1989. On the agenda will be proposed changes to the Young Offenders Act. Before this mcet- ing takes place, however, it is important that the public shows its support for change. If you are tired of violent criminals hiding behind the law, then write to: The Honorable Doug Lewis MP Justice Minister of Canada House of Commons __. Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 Yours Truly, Kari Klassen Project Coordinator Victims of Violence Canadian Centre for Missing Children Resource Centre taking over party-oricnted politicians (not only French), are promoting French as a means of unity. IT IS A LIE! Those in power are allowing Canada to become a French State under the Fleur de Lys, not the Maple Leaf. The promotion of French Immersion for our children is their Achilles Heel. Young par- ents, TAKE YOUR CHILDREN OUT OF FRENCH IMMER- SION CLASSES! If they get our children, in ten years they will have our country. Our children will lose in the long run because they are not French. Do not succumb to the propaganda and fear propagated by those presently in authority. This is one of the means used to change the identity of Canada from an English speaking to a Continued on page 8 Health professions deregulated Dear Editor; The word is out! Our freedom of choice in health care is in jeop- ardy! The long-awaited report from the Health Professions Legislation Review (H.P.L.R.) has been tabled in the Ontario Legislature and its recommenda- tions - soon to become law - will have dire consequences for the whole natural -health field UNLESS WE AS CITIZENS AND TAXPAYERS DO SOME- THING ABOUT IT NOW. This report lists 24 health pro- fessions on the regulated list and 31 others which have been placed on the unregulated list. This means that anyone on the unregu- lated list will legally not be able to diagnose, assess, advise or treat a patient. The profession most affect by this is Naturopathy, which is being put on the deregulated list after being regulated under the Drugless Practitioners Act since 1925 - over 63 years! This will effectively wipe Naturopaths off the natural health care map. Why the government wants to take them off the regulated list is incomprehensible, since they are certainly proven qualified profes- sionals and have fulfilled the gov- ernment's criteria for regulation. Naturopaths must have com- pleted at least three years univer- sity with related science subjects and have graduated from a recog- nized Naturopathic Medical School with no less than four years and 5,000 hours of training in the various disciplines. They must pass the 17 basic science and clinical examinations set by the Regulatory body, the Board of Drugless Therapy - Naturopathy. Programs of study include anatomy, biochemistry, medical genetics, toxicology and pathology as well as interdisci- plinary holistic clinical sciences such as food and environmental alleray tecting diet theranv. mas- sage, pediatrics and radiology. Ehere -are 175° practising Naturopaths and 130 students in Ontario at the moment. WE don't want them to have to move to B.C. or the U.S.A. because they can't practise their chosen profes- sion in Ontario under this new proposed legislation. Since our son is a qualified practising Naturopath in Newmarket I am helping to lobby the Ontario government to put Naturopaths back on the regulat- ed list before this new legislation is introduced into the legislature. We need your help in writing the government immediately to let them know how you feel about this proposed legislation and your freedom of choice in health care. For your FREE copy of "Striking a New Balance: a Blueprint for the Regulation of Ontario Health Professions" phone 1-800-268-1153. In this new legislation the gov- ernment will also have the instru- ment to eliminate all alternative health practitioners and severely limit the distribution of vitamins, herbs, homeopathics, etc. Can you imagine only being able to get vitamins and herbs at a pharmacy if they become classed as "drugs"? Health food stores will be greatly limited. Also state your feelings about this in your letters to Health Minister Elinor Caplan; David Reville, Health Critic (he is sympathetic but needs letters); Premier David Peterson; and Hon:*Murray ©' Elston (who was Health Minister when this legislation was con- ceived). If you want more information on this matter feel free to write to me as well. A concerned citizen for natu- ral health care, Sheila Gatis, R.R. 6, Wiarton, Ont. (What ever happened to Love Thy Neighbor?). What ever happened to help each other out? All we see now is everyone cutting each other's throats and worst thing about it is it's your best friend. And as far as these mothers bringing up children on their own and getting low rental houses, at least they are putting a roof over their kids heads the best way they know how! You stop and think that if they got a full-time job, to pay out a baby-sitter, mortgage payments, food etc... they have nothing left. At least with them working part-time and having themselves on a budget, they have more time for their children. Now, speaking of children, take a look at all the single par- ents and the couples who are mar- ried and tell me, who is more spoiled? : The ones who have hardly anything, have so much love. The ones who think they have every- thing are the ones with the spoiled brats! What ever happened to sharing and caring instead of crying "Look wHat I have, too bad your parents can't afford it." This is the way kids are being raised today. It's not what you have, it's what you've got. This is what's important. So please think about this let- ter and get out there to say hi to who you meet, not to go for cof- fee and gossip about your neigh- bors or so called friends. I really hope this letter does not offend anyone. The point I am trying to make is "Love Thy Neighbor!" A. Donaldson Visiting Thunder Bay? Shopping? Skiing?
