DIGITAL SWITCHING Starts May 27 for Schreiber Customers. Customers in the Schreiber exchange will be served from digital switching equipment starting May 27, 1989. This will provide more efficient service and allow for optional Custom Calling Features. New Switching Equipment ; When Digital Switching goes in service on May 27, 1989, you will notice some changes. For example, the dial tone will have a different sound and, if you have arotary dial telephone set, you will not hear a click in the receiver as the dial returns to rest. Be sure to begin dialing as soon as you hear the dial tone. If you delay, the equipment may time out and you will need to hang up and dial again. When dialing to other exchanges you may finda noticeable pause from the time you finish dialing until the called telephone rings. This is caused by the transition from one type of switching equipment to another. If you have a Touch-Tone Telephone Touch-Tone telephones must be connected to a Touch-Tone line for the service to continue to work after the changeover to digital switching. If you have purchased a Touch-Tone telephone or have been given one as a gift and have not yet subscribed to Touch-Tone service, please call the Business Office to avoid any service disruption. An administrative charge may apply for subscribing to Touch-Tone service in addition to the monthly charge of $2.55 for residence; $3.80 for business. Rural-line Service If you call someone with rural-line service you will no longer hear a coded ring (for example, one long and one short ring). Instead you will hear a single ring, repeated until the phone is answered. The person on arural line will hear the coded ring as usual. New features available soon Following the changeover to digital switching, you will have an opportunity to try out some Custom Calling Features -- call forwarding, call waiting and speed calling. Photo by Dave Chmara Torch of Peace to pass through local towns By Dave Chmara In 1989, thousands of runners worldwide will unite for world peace: Peace Run '89 takes place simultaneously in over 70 coun- tries spanning six continents. Peace Run Canada '89 will see the Torch of Peace carried from St. John's to Victoria. It will be passing through Terrace Bay and Schreiber June 5. Ceremonies will take place in front of the Municipal Office in Schreiber at 5:30 p.m. and in front of the Municipal Office -in Terrace Bay at 7:15 p.m. Anyone interested in running along with the core group of run- ners is welcome to do so. The Canadian portion of Peace Run '89 will cover 11,000 km in 82 days. It began May 10 in Victoria, B.C. and will end July 31 in St. John's, Newfoundland. The torch will be in Ottawa July 1 for the Canada Day celebra- tions. The Peace Run does not seck to raise money or to promote any political or religious' cause, although its ideals are founded upon a belicf in individual frec- dom and the spirit of tolerance.
