It has been in the Thunder newspapers as well as on CBQ radio. It generated quite some discus- sion as to whether or not it should be implemented. The result of those discussions in Thunder Bay has been that the Lakehead Board of Education Curriculum Department has started to develop a program of religious studies for their elementary schools. This program is to be imple- mented' in September of 1989, is to be introduced in the primary/junior division, and will expand from there to the higher grades in the years following. The Lake Superior Board of Education has also recently struck an ad-hoc committee to look into the question of religious studies and opening exercises in the schools. With Mr. Ed Taylor in the. chair, this committee met twice and made the following recom- mendations to the trustees of the Lake Superior school board. a. Opening Exercises - It was moved by the ad-hoc committee, and approved by the trustees that "each day shall be opened with O'Canada, and shall include read- ings or prayers from the docu- ment 'Readings and prayers for use in Toronto schools' developed by the board of education for the b. Religious Studies - It was moved, and approved, that the current practises continue until such time as the Ministry of Education has had time to react to the report of the Ministerial Inquiry (presently underway). In the meantime, the Lake Superior School Board will make a sub- mission to the Ministerial Inquiry, which will state that this board supports preservation of the legis- lation currently in place (reg 262). This regulation allows the schools to give two, half hour sessions per week of religious instruction per class. The reason for this letter is to notify the public at large that a Ministerial Inquiry is in progress at this time, and that the public is invited to send in briefs and rec- ommendations. These, however, have to be postmarked not later than May 15, 1989 in order to be considered. The address is: Ministerial Inquiry Religious Education c/o Dr. Glenn A.
