Page 2, News, Wednesday, July 20, 1988 Helene's Bit of biting ¢ classic books 'n jokes |: By Helene Ballard Hi! Well-at last we got a bit of rain, which no doubt helped, but we need much more. The men who have done such a good job of fight- ing the forest fires were happy. I am surely happy for the help even this bit of rain brought. It has been quiet here at the Home; some of the staff are away on holidays and-as for the residents going outside, those pesky flies make it almost impossible to sit outside for very long. This past week we welcomed new resident Viola Hanson from Nipigon, and we hope she will enjoy her stay with us. I hope you nice folks have noticed the grounds around 'Birchwood. Thanks to our mainte- nance department. While I'm at it, thanks to Mina and Cliff Barker for the garden and flowers; it sure makes our Home-look nice. The results of the Bridge and Cribbage tournament held on July 3 are as follows: Bridge- Ladies' High, Mary Ihmatko; Men's High Dr. Adey.; Ladies' Low, Helene Wallace; Men's Low, August Rantz Cribbage- Ladies' High, Louella -McColeman; Men's High, John Haché. As there is not that much news, T'll end with this "wee joke:" Four young friends were enjoy- ing coffee together. Three of them were expectant fathers, and' they were wondering if the baby would be affected by what the mother was doing while waiting to give birth. The fourth young man, who was a medical student, said with a grin on his face: "Sure it will. If the mother is musical and likes music, chances are that the baby will be if the mother sings while she is wait- in 2. " "Tf she reads a lot, can that have an effect too?," asked one of the expectant fathers. "Yep," said the student doctor. At this point, the three young fathers-to-be jumped up in a hurry. "Hey guys, what's wrong? asked the student doctor. "Well," said one man, "when I left home my wife was reading A Tale of Two Cities. The second man said: "Gosh! my wife is reading The Three Muskateers." The third man almost fell down in his haste to get home. His wife was reading Birth of a Nation. Until Next time, Ciao. By Norm Gladish MNR Fire Prevention Technician As the North Central Region has steadily dried out under the influence of clear skies, high winds and temperatures for the past week, _ fire occurrences have increased. Beginning on Tuesday, July 5, we had six fires. By the next day, we were up to 25. The number of fires was reduced to 12 on Thursday, but returned to 25 on Friday. One of Friday's fires was in the Terrace Bay District. This fire (Terrace Eleven) start- ed in the early afternoon as a result of the steel track of a Feller- Buncher tree harvester scraping across bedrock. resulting sparks ignited dry moss and forest litter. Forest industry workers at the site were unable to contain the fire with available extinguishers and pack- pumps. MNR sent out one 5-man crew by helicopter from Manitouwadge for initial attack. Assistance was requested immediately, as the fire was observed running toward standing timber. A second crew was dispatched from Geraldton, also by air, while another crew from manitouwadge and one from Terrace Bay were en route by truck. Meanwhile, water bombers were requested from the Regional Fire Centre in Thunder Bay. A tense moment occurred when Regional Fire Centre replied that the nearest bomber was at Pigeon River, nearly 300 miles from here. Fortunately, a CL-215 was avail- able from Wawa. These aircraft cooled the flames at the head of the fire so that the four crews on the ground, now assembled with pumps and hose, could approach close enough to apply water directly on the fire's edge. Before dark, four crews of MNR fire fighters and wood work- ers were able to contain the fire to 20 hectares. An early start Saturday morning and the use of helicopters to drop water on hot spots ensured that the fire remained under control. A small quantity of cut wood had been lost, but no damage was sus- tained by harvesting equipment in the area. The week of July 5-10 marked the first time this year that our region (North Central) surpassed the Northwest Region with daily fire starts, mostly caused by light- ning. The Northwest had finally been doused with up to 60 millime- tres of welcome rain, cooling the fire situation considerably. Meanwhile, if you are camping, please remember that campfires are not allowed. Cooking may be done on portable stoves or on charcoal briquettes only.
